Kamaal's tirade against Farooq, Omar to benefit PDP
Congress No Gainer

JAMMU, Nov 24: NC president Farooq Abdullah humiliated his younger brother Mustafa Kamaal by removing him unceremoniously from the posts of additional general secretary and chief spokespersons only a couple of days ago. He took this extreme step to please the alienated Congress high command (in this case AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Omar Abdullah's friend) and avert the impending disaster (ouster of Omar Abdullah from the corridors of power).
He might have succeeded in achieving the short-term goals but his action would prove fatal for the NC in the long run. He has not outraged the sentiments of his sister or her son Muzzaffar Shah; he has outraged the sentiments of his brother who is unlikely to digest his humiliation at the hands of his brother and nephew (Omar Abdullah). In fact, Kamaal has already started exposing the father and son.
Kamaal dismissed Omar Abdullah as a weak and insecure administrator and person the day he was told to pack up and resign from all the party positions and did not leave any one in any doubt that he felt highly outraged because of the manner in which he was ousted. Remember, Kamaal was condemned unheard. He not only termed Omar Abdullah a weak administrator/person and himself a victim of the conspiracy, but also directly charged Omar Abdullah with compromising the party position for the sake of personal power.
He continues to hold this position even today. Rather, he has gone several steps further to show Omar Abdullah his rightful place. Only yesterday, he ridiculed Omar Abdullah saying governments are not run from the cozy office chambers. "To run the government one has to feel the ground situation by reaching out to people rather than sitting in cozy chambers," he said while talking to a local daily from Jammu. Significantly, he didn't overrule the possibility of his becoming chief minister. "Destiny can have anything in store for me, but I don't want to go the Awami National Conference (ANC) way. I know our enemy wants to divide our camp but I will not let them succeed in their nefarious designs…I don't believe in factionalism. I was born in NC and will die in the party," he told his interviewer.
The Kamaal's yesterday's remarks and criticism directed against Omar Abdullah signifies two things. One, he would go on attacking and exposing Omar Abdullah. Two, he would not leave the NC; he would use the NC platform to consolidate his position, cultivate many a party leader and see to it if he could teach Omar Abdullah a lesson by exposing him and his acts of omission and commission, as also his insatiable lust for power.
Reports emanating from Kashmir and party headquarters in Jammu clearly suggest that the evil effect of what Kamaal has been saying since his disgraceful exit is being felt by almost everyone in the NC. They are worried about the likely fall-out of the line Kamaal has taken recourse to settle personal score.
Insiders reveal that the manner in which Kamaal was removed has not been taken kindly by a section of the NC leadership. "Kamaal committed no wrong in airing his views on the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, Army, AFSPA and JKPCC leadership; he had only spoken the truth and nothing but the truth," the insiders disclosed and added that "it was wrong on the part of Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah to remove such a dedicated and committed NC leader from the party position".
It is quite clear that there are elements in the NC who are bemoaning the Kamaal's ouster. Their number could multiply because there are many in the party who are feeling suffocated. The insiders also reveal that "many in the party would want Farooq Abdullah, Mustafa Kamaal and Omar Abdullah to work together in the larger interest of the party failing which it would be the advantage People's Democratic Party". "There is need to bridge the gap and it would be in the interest of the party if two (Kamaal and Omar) are seen together and speaking in one voice on the issues confronting the state," a report has suggested.
There are reasons to believe that trust deficit between the two brothers and between Kamaal and Omar Abdullah would increase. The situation is such. They have reached a point of no return. It's no wonder then that the PDP leadership is watching with interest the conflict within the Abdullah dynasty believing that this conflict would turn out to be a boon for it.
This assessment is not flawed. It's accurate assessment. The Congress, along with the NC, would also lose the ground because whatever is happening in the Abdullah dynasty has a direct bearing on the state's administrative apparatus. Since the Congress is sharing power with the NC, the former will have to pay a very heavy prince, at least in Jammu province, its core constituency.
