Why should Abdullahs head NC? | Of Dr Farooq and peoples' power | | Early Times Report rajouri, Nov 24: Former Chief Minister and Union Minister for Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah today said power flows from people. He was addressing party worker here today. He talked about importance of Panchayat empowerment. Farooq is right when he says `people are the fountain head of power'. This is exactly what the some of the National Conference workers have been saying for long. However, in actual practice, Farooq does not believe in what he said today. In September last year there was talk of change of NC leadership. People expected a person not linked to the Sheikh family as head of the organization. Dr Farooq rushed from New Delhi to make things clear. "The presidentship of National Conference shall remain in the Sheikh family", he announced while addressing a handful of NC members who had been herded to his Gupkar residence. Farooq's `autocratric' statement evoked severe reaction from various quarters including some saner party workers. London based columnist, Dr Nazir Geelani ridiculed Farooq's statement terming it `irresponsible' and undemocratic'. Two months later on November 21, 2010, he took a dig at Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani. He said, "accidental leaders had made lives of people difficult in Jammu Kashmir." Farooq for the information of one and all was also imposed on a reluctant people by his father, Sher-e-Kashmir.In 1981, Sher-e-Kashmir held a massive convention of National Conference in the erstwhile Hazuri Bagh. It was in this rally that Dr Farooq's coronation took place. To give a democratic tinge to a total autocratic exercise, Sher-e-Kashmir asked the people if Dr Farooq was acceptable to them. The people said 'Zaroor 'and that was it. Dr Farooq held a similar function to impose his son, Omar Abdullah on the people a few years ago. Again the people said Zaroor. On both the occasions no efforts were made to find more suitable candidates for the NC presidentship outside the Sheikh Family. National Conference claims it fought against autocratic Dogra rule. But what has it been promoting? Both Sher-e-Kashmir and Dr Farooq Abdullah promoted family rule. And today when Farooq made a highly democratic statement at Rajouri, many questions were raised. Does he really mean it? If yes, then he must set his house (National Conference) in order. This organization is craving for competent person for quite some time. Is there any possibility of a person not linked to Sheikh family to head the organization? |
