11/25/2011 11:33:49 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 25:
Three leopards were found dead some 190 kms from Jammu in Chathala village in Prem Nagar of Doda district under the jurisdiction of Wild life Department, Kishtwar. It was the locals who informed the police and officials of wildlife department that 3 leopards including female and her cubs aged between 2-3 years are dead and were lying in the nearby forest area along road side.
After getting the information about the killing of three leopards, the officials of wildlife department rushed to the spot and took the custody of dead bodies of all the three leopards.
After taking the custody of the dead leopards, the official first shifted them to nearby police post from where they were taken to Doda for autopsy.
Among the three dead leopards, head of a female Leopard was found removed from her body which indicates that the killings were the handiwork of some poachers who might have poisoned the Leopards and later tried to shift them to safer place.
The officials didn’t rule out the possibility that those who were behind the killings of these Leopards might have kept them aside however the locals sighted them which forced them to flee from the spot.
According to the Wildlife Guard in Doda, he received the information from his Range Officer in which he has been directed to meet the SHO police Station Doda. He said that after he meets the local SHO, he informed him to report police post Chatala in Prem Nagar Doda and accordingly he reached the said village along with police and takes the custody of the dead bodies of all the three leopards. He said that police post officials told them that last night they saw two Leopards dead in nearby forest, but when we reach their instead of two, there were 3 leopards who are dead.
Meanwhile Range Officer wildlife Department Kishtwar said that inquiry into the killing of Leopard has been initiated and said that the department has approached the police for registration of an FIR. He said that as of now it is premature to say anything and it was only after the autopsy report we will be able to find the reason behind the death of the Leopards.
