'Dr Abdullah says AFSPA will go one day, but Omar will decide | | | Agencies new delhi, Nov 25: Typical of his non-serious attitude towards some of the most serious issues concerning the State of Jammu and Kashmir, NC president and union minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah has made two contrasting statements in the same breath. "AFSPA will be revoked one day," he told the correspondent of a national wire service here and at the same time added, "The chief minister will decide." To a question whether his son, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would take his advice, the senior Abdullah laughed and walked away. Farooq Abdullah, who was thrice chief minister of the state, was visiting the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy stall at the India International Trade Fair here Friday. While his son and State Chief Minister has been persisting with his demand for partial lifting of AFSPA from the state, the elder Abdullah has either being laughing away to avoid questions or spending most of his time to save his son's top job in the State. Omar has visited the national capital to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A.K. Antony and the army chief, General V.K. Singh, to discuss the matter. At a cabinet meeting in Jammu Thursday, Omar Abdullah offered to amend the Rambir Penal Code, which is special to the state, to bring it in line with the Criminal Procedure Code (Cr PC) to provide protective cover to the armed forces in counter-insurgency operations, sources said. While the army has put its foot down on any immediate revocation of the act, the father-son duo has been acting in an archetypal manner to remain in power in the State. Frustrated over the state of affairs in the NC, Omar's uncle and senior NC leader Mustafa Kamal has also picked up the gauntlet criticizing his brother and nephew for non-governance and creating confusion over the issue. |
