4-day Philately Exhibition-Post Office Festival concludes Relevance of post offices will continue even after latest technologies: Sham | Nasir for promotion of tourism through postal services | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, NOVEMBER 26 – The 4-day Philately Exhibition and Post Office Festival (23-26), which was organized by the Department of Posts at Kala Kendra was concluded today. Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma was the chief guest and MoS Home & Tourism, Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani was guest of honor on the valedictory function. Colorful cultural bonanza highlighting the heritage of India, quiz competition on different subjects and stamp design contest were centre of attraction of the culmination function. The students of different schools and colleges from across the Jammu province participated in various competitions and they mesmerized the jam packed gathering in the Kala Kendra’s hall with their presentation. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma said that even with the domination by Information Technology in all fields, post office’s identity is very much relevance even today and will continue to remain. He said post office has its own identity and mandate which is associated with the day to day life of common man, particularly in the rural areas. Even today, the letters are being written to the people to their dear ones to express their inner feelings and ideas. This age old practice will prevail even after decades to come, said Mr. Sharma. Lauding the role of postal services during the turmoil, particularly in the Valley, Mr. Sham said that department worked in the difficult situations and provided the communication services to the people. He hoped that the department would continue to strive for better services to the people. He also highlighted the schemes launched by the postal department for the poor people. They also distributed prizes amongst the students who excelled in various activities during the 4-day event. Chief Post Master General, J&K, Mr. John Samuel welcomed the guests and thanked for gracing the occasion. He briefed the gathering on the objective of organizing the exhibition. He apprised that collection of more than 1 lakh stamps of over 100 countries were displayed during the exhibition, which included world’s first postal stamps “Penny Black” and Asia’s first stamp. The aim of organizing the exhibition to create interest amongst the people in the postal activities as also to refresh memories of people about the culture, heritage and history of the country, he added. Various individual philatelists also displayed their collection on different themes in the exhibition. Several prominent personalities, HoDs, teachers and large number of students were present in the concluding function.
