Sportspersons 'suffer' as goody- goody claims get entangled in 'red tapism' | | | Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Nov 26: Contrary to the tall claims of the State Government to promote sports infrastructure and to develop it at par with other states, the sports scenario here in J&K is lagging far behind as compared to other parts of the country largely due to the alleged official red-tapism and indifferent attitude of the authorities. Keeping in account the importance of the sports, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah often says, "Healthy state is a developed state", however, if one looks at the sports infrastructure in J&K, how can this state could be healthy where sports persons are struggling hard to receive the desired attention for their successes from the authorities. Lack of attention towards the achievements of several sports persons is another reason for the 'poor growth of sports' in the state. There are many J&K sportspersons who are still waiting for the due acknowledgement for their achievements from the government as well as non-governmental organisations' side. With no recognition for their accomplishments, a large number of players representing different sports leave the sports arena in a huff. There are instances that many players after being constantly ignored at the hands of sports bodies and state government are now running kiosks and small time shops to earn a respectable livelihood. "Appalling and pathetic- this is what the real sports scenario of the state particularly Jammu where only a handful of youth pursue their careers in different forms of games. The reason of low participation level is mainly due to the non- encouragement of the sportspersons by the authorities," a senior sports coach pleading anonymity annoyingly told Early Times. "I could provide a long list of players who by their sheer dint of hard work brought laurels to the State, however, in return they did not get due support and credit for whatever they could be able to achieve out of their performances," he added. The coach further said that it is not that the state of J&K is short of talent or flair for sports but the lack of vision and policies on part of the government are ruining the games. He said the people are least interested in encouraging their wards to take up sports as career since there is hardly any official recognition for the feats of sportspersons. "Look at the fate of renowned wrestler Dushyant Sharma, who remained national champion for ten long years and recently elected as president of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), which in no sense is a mean achievement," the Coach said. "Dushyant's election as chief of WFI is the biggest example of a success story in the history of J&K sports as he is the first ever player in the country to head a sports federation, however, for such a rare feat he was not even appreciated or congratulated by the authorities what to talk of a reward…. This is nothing but discouragement… What sort of standards is the government setting up for our budding sportspersons…. Under such circumstances, they will never take up sports," he lamented. It is not only the 'official apathy' which is causing heart burn among the sportspersons of the state, the 'indifferent attitude' of the non-governmental organisations have also failed to provide a soothing effect in the form of a reward. |
