Protest against FDI decision on Dec 1: Tarigami to traders | ‘Nobody will be allowed to snatch our livelihood means’ | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 27 (KNS): CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Kulgam M Y Targiami, Sunday appealed to the trade organizations to make the strike call given by the Confederation of All India Traders (CIT) a success on December 1 through massive participation in the protests. The CIT has given the call to unitedly oppose the Union Cabinet decision to allow FDI in multi band retail. In a statement, Tarigami claimed that the decision will destroy the livelihood of crores of small retailers countrywide, adding Jammu and Kashmir will also bear the brunt in view of its vast chain of retailers operating across its towns and villages. “Since J & K is primarily consumer state, the FDI here will hit thousands of retailers, who have set up enterprises in the wake of growing joblessness squeezing job avenues in government sector”, he said. “In its callous and anti people character, the UPA government seems to be eager to meet the demands of USA and other western governments and serve the interests of giant MNCs like Wal-Mart, Tesco and Carrefour at the cost of its own people,” he rued and urged the trader bodies to resist the FDI onslaught tooth and nail. The trade union leader said Jammu and Kashmir like the other states of India has the highest shopping density with lot many youngsters deriving sustenance out of the retail trade, adding FDI will certainly snatch their livelihood means to the detriment of their families. Tarigami said small retail has been virtually wiped out in the developed countries like the US and Europe, the fall out of which is quite visible in these countries in the shape of galloping unemployment and widening gap between the microscopic rich and vast poor. “The unrest among the youth world over is largely due to such policies, he said and accused the UPA government of succumbing to the foreign pressures due to its own weaknesses,” he added. The MLA Kulgam called upon all the sections of the people and trade bodies to jointly oppose the move and show the callous union government that it is the people whose writ will run in determining the economic policies of the country and general welfare of its masses. He also urged the state government not to become shareholders of the Centre in its anti people decision on FDI, adding the coalition dispensation in J & K should discourage such decisions in the interest of its people.
