Taj tops Congress supporters of Omar Abdullah | | | Amazingly Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, has more supporters in the Congress than within his National Conference despite the fact that his relations with the PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz,are not as cordial as they were when he took over as Chief Minister in 2008. Among those in the Congress who support Omar is the high profile PHE Minister, Taj Mohiuddin. During the last four months of political instability, the result of the controversy over Omar's statement on the AFSPA revocation, Taj Mohiuddin has been vocal in announcing his support to the Chief Minister. Even against the stand of the Congress Taj went on siding with Omar when he raked up the issue of partial revocation of the AFSPA. Taj was the first senior Congress minister to defend the Chief Minister's plan on amending the CRPC for providing a legal cover to the security forces, including the Army, in the absence of the AFSPA. And when the leadership of the state unit of the Congress gave vent to its anger over the failure of the Chief Miniter in taking the Congress into confidence on vital issues including his plan to secure withdrawal of AFSPA from some areas Taj was quick to react by saying that Omar Abdullah had consulted and informed him. Is Taj Mohiuddin representing the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir ? Does informing him about Omar's plan on partial withdrawal of the AFSPA amount to consultation of the Congress? It is not the case under the coalition rule. The coalition dharma provides for a consultation between the head of the Government, that is Omar Abdullah, and the head of the PCC, Saif-ud-Din Soz, as his party shares power with the National Conference. When senior leaders, including the PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz, reraised the issue of rotational chief Ministership, Taj had no qualms in opposing his party leadership by claiming that Omar Abdullah will be allowed to complete the six-year term. In support of his claim Taj said that the Congress high command had conveyed to him that it was not in favour of change of guard. Men who matter in the Pradesh Congress Committee believe that Taj was trying to put his weight as a cabinet minister by claiming that the was in constant touch with the AICC Chief,Sonia Gandhi, her aides and trusted party leaders. They say that Taj was trying to impress Omar and other senior NC leaders by claiming that he was the man of the AICC leadership in Jammu and Kashmir. Surprisingly, Taj has found a supporter in the Union Cabinet, and he is none other than the Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. Azad has been patronising the dissidents within the state unit of the Congress right from 90's with the sole purpose of establishing his foothold in the state and the party. If he is trying to weaken Soz it is not Azad's novel feat. He has done it when Ghulam Rasool Kar was the PCC Chief. He has supported the dissidents when Peerzada Mohd.Syed and Ch.Mohd. Aslam headed the state unit of the Congress.Azad has carried out moves to weaken the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir when Mohd. Shafi Qureshi was the PCC Chief. This time he has been opposing the demnd for change in the guard because he knows if rotational Chief Ministership was introduced in the state, as had been done between 2002 and 2008, his political rival Soz or one his (Soz's) trusted men may get a chance to replace Omar which would prevent Azad from strengthening his influence in the state and its Government. Apart from other political and administrative issues if there is anything that has caused erosion in the strength of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir it is the activities of the dissidents. No doubt Taj is yet to join the dissidents he has been warned against giving airs about his close equation with the party leadership in Delhi. |
