All eyes fixed on Justice Bedi as he arrives in Kashmir
11/28/2011 10:00:57 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 28:Justice (R) H S Bedi who has been appointed by the state government to probe the death of National Conference worker Haji Yousuf arrived here on Monday.
Justice Bedi heads the one-man Commission of Inquiry (COI) constituted by the government to look into the circumstances leading to the mysterious death of Yusuf.
Justice Bedi has been given six weeks time to complete the probe. In next few days he might question some of the key witnesses which include Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, MoS Home Nasir Aslam Wani, IGP Crime Branch, Raja Aijaz Ali, NC workers Salam Reshi and Yousuf Bhat.
Before initiating the probe, the COI head has asked the police to provide him details of crime record of deceased Haji Yousuf.
The General Administration Department (GAD) has issued a circular to all the concerned departments and asked them to facilitate the COI with regard to “men and machinery”.
Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Ali Mohammad Sagar has said the state government will provide every support to the COI for a fair and impartial probe.“
Justice Bedi is reputed, renowned and honest and nobody has doubt on his credibility. It is an indication that the probe will be impartial,” he said. Sagar also said, “It is upto him (Justice Bedi) whomsoever he wants to call, we have no problem.”
The state government had appointed the Commission on November 18 to probe the death of Yousuf, who died in mysterious circumstances on September 29 after he was summoned to the Chief Minister’s official residence.
The death of Yousuf had snowballed into a major controversy with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah being directly accused by the opposition parties. State government had immediately ordered for a judicial probe of the incident. Chief Minister had said he was ready to face the judicial commission.
“I will answer whatever questions are posed to me and I have no doubt that as a result of this judicial commission the facts will speak for themselves and all lies that I have been bombarded with will be shown to be absolute lies,” Omar had said.
Given the highly sensitive nature of the probe he heads and also his known exceptional personal credibility, honesty and integrity, Justice (R) H S Bedi has an onerous task to complete.
His findings will of course have far reaching consequences on the politics of J&K, but that should not and would not be the concern of Justice (R) H S Bedi. His duty is purely and absolutely judicial in nature and what matters is that the probe is completed in the most fair and transparent manner.
Having done that, which he is definitely sure to do, Justice (R) H S Bedi would have served the nation and people and also established the highest standards of judicial prudence and dispassionate rectitude.
