Jab Farooq ko Gussa Aaya ? | | | As his wont President National Conference and Union Minister for New and Renewable energy,Dr Farooq Abdullah,is quite angry. He is upset over the growing influence of the PDP on people in Jammu and Kashmir. He is so much agitated that China, the Army and the PDP leadership came up for sharp criticism on one pretext or the other.Instead of leaving the crucial and sensitive issue regarding Indo-Sino relations to the central Government he volunteered a comment on China when he was not asked to give his opinion. He told a public gathering, that too at a remote place like Mahanpur in Basholi, that China was "interferring in the internal affairs of India. He even went to the extent of cautioning China against inteferring in the internal affairs of India because India was not weak and could safeguard its national interest.Possibly Farooq Abdullah had no idea about the latest stand of Beijing on the proposed Buddhist conference being held in Delhi where the Dalai Lama is scheduled to address.China wants New Delhi to refuse permission to the organisers of the conference and in a bid to force its decision on India Beijing postponed the proposed talks for resolving the border dispute.Luckly Bijing has changed its mind and the proposed border talks may be held shortly. From the external dimensions of his political sermons Farooq's views about the Army deployment could have serious ramfications as far as the relations between the state Government and the Armed Forces are concerned. In his bid to lend moral and political support to his son,Omar Abdullah, who has been demanding withdrawal of the AFSPA from some areas in the state,Farooq has suggested to the centre especially the Defence Ministry to deploy the troops only on the LOC and withdraw them from within the civilian areas. In support of his suggestion he has stated that once it was done it could help the troops in checking infiltration of militants into Jammu and Kashmir from across the border. This very suggestion indicates the mindset of Farooq Abdullah.Presumably he believes that the Army has not been able to check ingress of militants. In order to lend credence to his observation he claims that infiltration of militants continues .It seems Farooq does not want to check the records.Had he done so he would have come to the conclusion that if there has been a marked drop in the level of ingress it is the result of security grid having been upgraded by the Army on the border. If some counter insurgency measures were being carried out by the police one finds that in 65 per cent such operations are carried out by the police in collaboration with the Army.Hence Farooq's views "Army to border and police ,CRPF given law and order" are untenable. He knows it.But in a bid to score over his political rival the PDP Farooq has been consistently demanding withdrawal of the AFSPA from some areas.Finding that his demand was not being conceded he has fulminated against the Army saying that the Army "was not the master of people of Jammu and Kashmir."As far as his ire against the PDP was concerned Farooq Abdullah had not to fumble for words while ber ating the PDP leadership. He has blamed the PDP for all the ills in the state and in order to keep Ghulam Nabi Azad on his side Farooq lambasted PDP leadership for having ditched Azad in 2008 by withdrawing support to the Government led by him.He has characterised the PDP move as a case of "political opportunism."When Farooq and his son,Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, give vent to their rancour against the PDP they are not to be blamed because they feel that only the PDP had been making fast inroads into the NC areas of influence.Farooq is already worried over the the NC led Government's poor performance which was being fully exploited by the PDP. As head of the National Conference Farooq Abdullah does not want to see the PDP winng the next poll battle which would be a defeat of the 72-year old NC in the hands of the 12-year old PDP.Hence his anger against the Muftis is understandable. |
