Website on PNDT Act launched | Sham announces enhancement of reward for whistle blowers | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, NOV 29: Strengthening measures to curb the practice of illegal sex determination in various USG Centers across the State, the Government has enhanced the reward for whistle blowers providing information about such activities. Earlier, the award was Rs. 25,000 and now increased to Rs 50,000. This will be applicable with immediate effect. This was informed by Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Sham Lal Sharma at a meeting of State Supervisory Board on PC & PNDT Act, held here today under his chairmanship. Seeking support of the society to improve sex ratio, the Minister said that only government efforts are not adequate to deal with this human and sensitive issue and people from all walks have to come forward in collective to fight against this inhuman trend of female feticide. He called for massive awareness through different mediums to educate the general masses, particularly in the rural and far flung areas. Various experts suggested measures to deal with the subject. Most of the speakers suggested amendment in the existing Act and stressed for making the laws more stringent and deterrent. They also suggested that the competent authority should step of its efforts and monitor the activities of USG clinics and strict implementation of existing rules. On the occasion, the Minister also launched an exclusive website for PC & PNDT Act. The website (www.pcpndtjk.in) has been specially designed for PC & PNDT Act which contains details regarding Rules, Regulations, and Statistics relating to the Act. This would also help the State/Divisional/District level authorities to retrieve and monitor the reporting of information provided on the form. He urged the experts to come up with their valuable views to amend the existing rules to improve things on ground. MLA Ms. Bimla Luthra also shared her views on the subject and suggested measures to tackle the issue. Commissioner/Secretary Health & Medical Education, G A Peer welcomed the participants and apprised about the initiatives taken by the Government to improve the sex ratio and to deal with the violators of the PNDT Act. He also called for active involvement of the civil society to deal with the subject. Mission Director, NRHM Dr Yashpal Sharma, who is also Member-Secretary of the Supervisory Board, briefed about the overall scenario of sex ratio and preventive measures initiated to deal with the menace of female feticide and illegal sex determination. The members were apprised that the concerned authorities in exercise of powers have sealed 18 USG clinics in Jammu and 73 in Kashmir division up to ending September, 2011 in violation of PNDT Act. Later, the Minister also chaired a high level monitoring committee meeting for reducing infant mortality in the State. He stressed for identifying the cause of death of infants and taking appropriate measures in this direction. Director Indian System of Medicines, Dr. Abdul Kabir, Controller, Drugs & Food Control Organization, Satish Gupta, Directors Health Services, Kashmir/Jammu, Dr Saleem-ur-Rehman, Dr Madhu Khullar, Director Family Welfare, Dr T.K.Moza, Additional Secretary Law, R K Koul, eminent lawyer, Ms Seema Shekhar and HoDs of various departments from the GMC and Jammu University were present on the occasion.
