Weak JU postpones inter-college cricket tourney | Cricket sobriquet 'gentleman's game' missing on JU campus | | early times report JAMMU, Nov 29: In the wake of a week conduct committee and lack of will on part of the Department of Sports and Physical Education of the University of Jammu (JU), the sobriquet - 'gentleman's game' was found missing in Jammu University rather cricket seemed no more a gentleman's game on the campus. For the last three years the prestigious inter-college cricket tournament is being disrupted by the students of Department of Law for one pretext or the other and the authorities concerned remained mute spectators to the dictates of such individuals, who are part of the combined side of PG Law and Sciences team. Three years back in 2009-10 season of the inter-college competition, the student of Department of Law disrupted the event in similar manners, resulting into JU abandoned the tournament. Last year too, attempt was made to spoil sport but timely intervention by some senior students prevented the future `law makers' from disrupting the event. Tournament postponed Meanwhile, failing to motivate the protesting team members of PG Law and Sciences, which yesterday lost to Government Degree College Rajouri by eight wickets, the Department of Sports and Physical Education of the University postponed the inter-college cricket tournament till further orders. "Yes, we have postponed the event till further order. We cannot concede to the unjustified demand of PG Law and Sciences to replay the game, because it is no where written in the laid down rules that a Twenty20 game close to finish can be replayed," said Director Sports, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau. He assured that an appropriate decision will be taken the competition shall resume very soon. It is pertinent to mention that the PG Departments of Law and Sciences were declared losers in the hands of Degree College Rajouri by eight wickets when former left the field citing bad light reasons. At that point of time Rajouri were in need of 10 runs with eight wickets in hand and 6.5 overs to bowl. Cricket humiliated The way a group of students, including first class cricketers, stopped the game between Government Degree College Paloura and Government Degree College Bhaderwah by uprooting the stumps in full public view, the gentleman's game of cricket has been humiliated on the campus. There are genuine ways and means to lodge protest and get the demands accepted but the game must go on. |
