Governor attends Lohri function

JAMMU, JANUARY 10
Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) S K Sinha today exhorted social organizations to strive for self reliance to achieve the objective of serving society through various services.
Speaking at a Lohri function organised by Shri Sanatan Dharam Sabha, Jammu at Abhinav Theatre here this evening, the Governor lauded the efforts being made by the organisation in imparting value based education to children, saying this will keep them in good stead to face the world with confidence.
The Governor assured the organizers that he will take up with the State Government the issue regarding resumption of grant-in-aid to the schools run in Jammu. He complimented the children of various Sanatan Dharam Sabha Schools for their impressive performance which was a blend of India’s ancient heritage. The traditions have to be kept alive and younger generation made aware of the country’s glorious past, he added.
General Sinha also extended Lohri greetings to the people and hoped that such festivals will be harbinger of peace and harmony.
The Governor presented mementos to the Sabha functionaries of various tehsils and districts on behalf of the organizers.
Prof K L Bhatia, former director of Jammu Law School threw light on the festival of Lohri while Mr D R Baru, President, Brahmin Pratinidhi Sabha gave a resume of the activities particularly in the field of spreading education. The Sabha is credited with having 105 year old girls school that had been set up in an era when much stress was not being given to female literacy.
On the occasion, students presented a Lohri skit and cultural programme depicting the importance of the festival in this part of the country.
A large number of people including prominent citizens participated in the function, which started with lighting of traditional lamp by the Governor and recitation of Vedic Mantras for universal peace and brotherhood.
