BJP questions propriety of Farooq’s remarks on Army | Asks NC patron to shed “Putra Moh” | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 30:Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has questioned the propriety of Dr. Farooq Abdullah as a Union Minister for passing derogatory remarks about Indian Army and the party has also asked the UPA government, including the Union Defence Minister and Union Home Minister, to clarify whether what Dr. Abdullah said in a detailed interview on a national channel was the official position of Manmohan Singh government. This was stated by BJP National General Secretary & National spokesperson Jagat Prakash Nadda while addressing a press conference at party headquarters here today. Jagat Prakash Nadda said that it is possibly for the first time in the history of independent India that a Union Minister was taking an individualistic stand on sensitive security issues and the Government of India was neither denying it nor endorsing it. In keeping with the rule of collective responsibility of Council of Ministers, if a member of the Union Council of Ministers holds an opinion which is different from the official stand of the Government, is it not appropriate for him to first tender his resignation and only then air his views in public. Nadda said that army is there in Jammu and Kashmir at the request of civilian administration and it is because of the army that peace could be restored in the state and conditions made conducive for National Conference government to function. He reminded that it was Dr. Farooq Abdullah and his son who had left the country in 1989 when the militancy in state was at its peak and it was the army only which rendered its services in restoring the faith of the people. Jagat Prakash Nadda said that any decision about Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) is not a “sole” prerogative of State Chief Minister. His suggestion for selective revocation of AFSPF from some districts is not feasible from point of view of security operations. He said that the withdrawal or continuance of Armed Forces Special Power Act should be left to the Unified command. It is a set process and let it function like that only when Unified Command takes views, sends it to Cabinet Committee for Security (CCS), and then the decision is taken in the interest of the state and the nation. The Unified Command is represented by Army, para-military forces, state police, different intelligence agencies and the state administration. He cautioned against playing politics in the name of Army or Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) which not only demoralizes the army rank and file but also encourages the separatist forces in the state. Nadda advised Dr. Farooq Abdullah to shed his “Putra Moh” and ask his son Omar Abdullah to concentrate on other issues confronting the state instead of politicising the issue of AFSPA. Announcing the party High Command’s decision to tomorrow’s Bharat Bandh over the issue of Foreign Direct Investment in retail market, Nadda said that such a decision of the Congress-led UPA will only harm the interests of the traders and the retailers and the BJP has been opposing it in the parliament as well as on roads. Pradesh BJP Seh-Prabhari Dr Anil Jain, State President Shamsher Singh Manhas, National Executive Member Ashok Khajuria and Chief Spokesperson Dr Jitendra Singh were also present on the occasion. |
