Govt. may discuss interlocutors' report after controversy over FDI & Lokpal ends
12/1/2011 10:03:42 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 1: The central Government may take up for discussion the recommendations on the Kashmir situation submitted by the three interlocutors only after the current logjam in Parliament ended.
Government sources said that the recommendations of the interlocutors, received by the Union Home Minister on October 12,were to be discussed first at the top level and then with the members of various political parties.
“We had plan on tabling those clauses of the recommendations, which were acceptable to the Government and other opposition political leaders, in the Parliament but our entire attention and energy has been diverted towards the Lok Pal bill issue and the row over Foreign Direct Investment (FDI),"said official sources.
The Government has not yet taken any decision on the report submitted by a three-member team of interlocutors headed by Dilip Padgaonkar. Two other members were Radha Kumar and M.M.Ansari.
The report has recommended mild dose of autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir by simply reviewing some of the central laws that were extended to the state after 1953 so that those laws which were not in the interest of the people of the state could be repealed. However, the interlocutors have not favoured restoration of pre-1953 constitutional status. It has also recommended withdrawal of the AFSPA in a phased manner and that too after the approval of the Army.
Official sources said in reply to a question, “we have neither accepted all the recommendations nor rejected the report because we have not yet elicited opinion from other political parties and the general public."
The report has cautioned the Government against fiddling or tampering with Article 370 that gives to Jammu and Kashmir state a special status within the union of India.
Indications are that the Government may discuss the report with leaders of other political parties only after the current logjam in parliament ended.
