Kashmir apple sales fall by 50 pc as winter sets | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT BARAMULLA: Dece 1:After being in high demand during the autumn season, the sales of Kashmir valley’s apples have started falling down drastically with the onset of winter. People associated with the sector say that there has been up to 50 per cent decline in apple prices.
“The demand for apples remained sky-scraping in autumn. Every kind of Kashmiri apple was sold at higher rates in all the markets of the country but now in the winters when we were expecting a good market it is declining down with every passing day. I sold my apples of delicious quality at an average of Rs. 650 per box but now the same is sold at Rs. 350,” said Farooq Ahmad, a fruit grower.
Ali Mohammad, another fruit grower, said, “In Kolkata box of red delicious was sold at Rs 1200 in the initial days of October but then the market started falling and some of the apples are now sold at Rs.600 per box. Comparing to previous prices I think this time we are selling our fruit at peanuts. We are facing a huge loss and it seems that the market will never go up.”
An official of the horticulture department said the reason behind the good demand of Kashmiri apples previously was a result of ‘production decline’ in Himachal and Chinese apples.
“Due to tremendous decline in Himachal Pradesh apple production and due to unavailability of Chinese apple in Asian markets because of severe damage caused to 3.2 lakh farmland in China, the demand for Kashmiri apples rose. But now in winters when various kinds of fruits are available in Indian markets and that too at cheaper rates, the demand for the Kashmiri apples has declined,” he said.
However, the president Fruit Association Sopore, Fayaz Ahmad Malik, said the poor demand of Kashmir apples was an outcome of the poor quality of pesticides. “Moreover, when it is kept in stores over a period of time, it gets decayed within days in this cold season…that is why its demand is declining in the markets,” he added.
Malik also predicted that there would be more downfall in the demand for apples in future.
