Sarpanchs, panchs empowered to impose fine from smokers | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Dec 01 (KNS): Sarpanchs and panchs have been empowered under Anti-Tobacco Act to impose fine from those people who are seen smoking in public places. “Government has empowered sarpanchs and panchs to impose fine from those who are found smoking in public places,” said, Shabir Ahmad Lone, Food Inspector Drug Control Organization, while addressing an anti-tobacco rally, here on Thursday. Lone gave details of the anti-tobacco laws for prohibition of tobacco at public places and educational institutions. The programme was organized by Jammu & Kashmir Voluntary Health Association in collaboration with Divisional Administration Kashmir, Civil Defence Organization and SP Higher Secondary School, Srinagar. The volunteers were sensitized about the Tobacco Control Act and rules related to prohibition of smoking at public places. Dr. Abdul Majeed, Associate Professor SKIMS made a Power Point presentation highlighting ill-effects of smoking and various dangers caused to humans by tobacco products. Executive Director J&K VHA, A M Mir gave details about the programme and appreciated the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon for raising the level of awareness about the hazards of cigarettes and other tobacco products. Later, a rally was taken out by the Civil Defence volunteers from SP Higher Secondary School upto Civil Defence Control Room.
