JAMMU, Dec 1: Powered by a splendid century by wicket-keeper batsman Ateev Saini and his fifth wicket partnership of 162 runs with Nipun Verma, J&K ended the day-1 of the 3-day Vijay Merchant Trophy match against Haryana at 302/ 8 at Panchkula in Haryana today. Ateev played a fine innings of 157 runs, while Nipun contributed well-made 65 runs. Surya made 18 runs,
Put into bat first, J&K were struggling at 44 for 4 before the middle order batsmen duo of Ateev Saini and Nipun Verma consolidated the innings and helped Jammu and Kashmir to post a decent score, before the stumps were drawn today. At stumps, Tribhuvan and Rishab Gupta were unbeaten on 13 and 7 runs respectively. For Haryana, U Kakal was the wrecker-in-chief, who claimed four wickets, while S Khatri took two and S Paul and Bawal picked one each.
It is pertinent to mention here that such performances will go a long way in improving the standard of cricket at the grass root level.
