Srinagar-Leh highway closed for winter, bad weather hits flights | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 1: Air traffic to Kashmir was severely affected due to inclement weather forcing cancellation of many flights even as the 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway was today closed for winter. "Only four of over a dozen flights could land at Srinagar International Airport as the rest were cancelled due to the bad weather," an official said. The cancelled flights included two of the three carrying Haj pilgrims who had gone to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Officials said the highway was closed for the winter months as per the government order last week. The notification said that the highway from Sonamarg on this side of the Zojila pass to Drass road was to close for vehicular traffic of all types from December 1. Officials asked people to desist from travelling on the road which usually remains buried under several feet of snow during winter. Although Kashmir Valley is reeling under dry cold spell, the decision to suspend the traffic on the highway was taken as a precautionary measure as the night temperature across the region, especially in Ladakh, has fallen by over 10 degrees below the freezing point. "We have withdrawn the staff as the road was closed for traffic this morning," a spokesman of the traffic department said. Ladakh is one of the highest places on earth with average altitude being above 12,000 feet. The officials said there were sufficient essentials, including diesel, petrol, LPG and medicines, stored in different parts of the Ladakh region, including Leh and Kargil, for the winter months. |
