FDI In Retail: Government of PM, by PM and for PM | Sham Democracy | | Neha JAMMU, Dec 2: Who says Indian democracy means "government of the people, by the people and for the people? Those who say so are only fooling themselves and the hapless people of the country. Democracy in India means government of the Prime Minister and a section of the Congress leadership, by the Prime Minister and a section of the Congress leadership and for the Prime Minister and a section of the Congress leadership. The Indian democracy also means the government of the United States, France and England, by the United States, France and England and for the Unite States, France and England. The Indian democracy, in addition, means the government of multi-national companies and big corporate houses, by the multi-national companies and big corporate houses and for the multi-national companies and big corporate houses. In other words, Indian democracy means the only right of the people is to elect the government and the right of the government to ride roughshod, barter the country's sovereign and economic interests and enable the countries like the United States, France and England to drain the Indian wealth and reduce India to the status of their colony, as was the case before 1947. Indian democracy is a sham democracy. The people have no say whatever in the governance of the country. The people have no say whatever in the decision-making bodies. The people have no say whatever in the law-making bodies. Even the opposition parties have no say whatever in the governance of the country, in the law-making bodies and in the decision-making bodies. Their views and their opinions have no meaning. Their opposition to the controversial decisions of the government has no meaning. The fact is that the obstinate Prime Minister and the obstinate section of the Congress leadership have thrown to the wind all the cardinal principles of democracy and rendered it a meaningless sham. There can't be another view. What has been happening in the country since last Thursday should leave none in any doubt that we have in India a perverted form of democracy. When the Parliament session was on, the Prime Minister and his cabinet colleagues took a decision permitting 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment in multi-brand retail trade overlooking the dangerous ramifications which would follow. It is now almost clear that the Prime Minister and a section of the Congress leadership took this decision under pressure from the United States and other countries. The US ambassador to India has openly supported the decision of the Prime Minister's decision. The US State Department has openly supported the Prime Minister's decision. The American-based owners of the multi-national companies like the Wall-Mart have also openly supported the Prime Minister's decision. The Prime Minister and his cabinet colleagues belonging to the Congress party of Sonia Gandhi, the National Conference of Farooq Abdullah and the Nationalist Congress Party of Shard Pawar refused to respect the views of the Railway Minister belonging to the Trinamool Congress of Mamta Bannerjee, who is bitterly opposed to the idea of allowing 51 per cent FDI in retail trade rightly opining such a misadventure would jeopardize the interests of the small and marginal farmers, the small and petty traders and those engaged in small-scale industry. The Prime Minister and a section of the Congress refused to enlist the views of DMK of Karunanidhi, the Samajwadi Party of Mulayam Singh, the Rashtriya Janata Dal of Lalu Prashad Yadav and Bahujan Samajwadi Party of Maywati and the Indian Muslim League, all supporting the government the UPA government from outside or otherwise. All these parties whose support is crucial for the survival of the Manmohan Singh-led anti-people, anti-farmer and anti-small trader government are vehemently opposing the Prime Minister and the Congress party and are asking it to rollback the decision in the interest of the nation. The Prime Minister and a section of the Congress leadership are saying down with this opposition; we will not rollback because rollback would lower the Indian position in the eyes of the international community; we are prepared to jeopardize the interests of the traders, farmers and poor Indians but we cannot offend the United States and jeopardize the interests of the multi-national companies; we will implement the decision come what may. All the opposition parties, including the BJP, the BJD, the Janata Dal (United), the Janata Dal (Secular), the Telgu Desam Party, the AIADM, the CPI, the CPI-M, the Forward Block, the Shiv Sena, Shiromani Akali Dal, to mention only a few, are opposing the decision of the truncated Cabinet, but with no result. A number of Congress MPs and the state unit of the Congress party in Kerala are opposing the decision, but with no result. The Parliament has not been able to function since November 22, but it is neither bothering the adamant Prime Minister nor the arrogant Congress. They are saying the decision would benefit the traders and farmers overlooking the fact that the involvement of the multination companies in the retail trade in India would only benefit them and the foreign countries like the United States. They are shamelessly accusing the right and the left of unleashing a misinformation campaign to mislead the people. They are forcing the coalition partners to fall in line. It needs to be underlined that President Obama consistently asks the American consumers to buy goods from local shops and not from the Wall-Mart. He twitted two days ago urging the American consumers to buy goods from local markets saying it would improve the American economy. Former BJP president Raj Nath Singh today quoted what president Obama twitted. Yesterday, the entire country observed a massive bandh to register an emphatic protest against the decision, but with no result. Over 4 crores of petty shopkeepers and traders kept their shutters down to persuade the Prime Minister and the Congress to withdraw the decision, but with no result. And, over four crore traders and shopkeepers mean over 20 crore Indians. Over 15,000 organizations of traders and shopkeepers organized the bandh hoping the Prime Minister and the Congress party would see reason and relent, but no impact whatever on the Prime Minister and the Congress. On the contrary, the Prime Minister has constituted a group of eleven ministers, all Rahul Gandhi's men, to counter the opposition parties and the agitating traders and shopkeepers. This is the Indian democracy and this, despite the fact that the Congress has only 205 members in the Lok Sabha consisting of 542 members. In other words, the Congress is in minority in the Lok Sabha. It is also in minority in the Rajya Sabha. It would be not be surprising if the alienated Indians say down with such democracy that only dismisses the opposition and the people with contempt and that dances to the tunes of the US and similar other countries whose economies have collapsed and which want to enrich their economies at the cost of the already suffering people of India. |
