Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 2: There has been a complete row over the construction of Harki Pori -Maha Maya temple road wit Forest Ministry totally opposed to construction of a motorable road in the area after felling the trees. The Minister of Forest Mian Altaf who accompanied Minister of Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Raman Bhalla to the area yesterday to sort out the problem has categorically denied granting of permission to felling of threes in the City Forest area for construction of the road.
According to sources Bhalla who also represents the area had assured the local people that a motorable road will be constructed in the area amid the city forest but for this purpose hundreds of trees are to be cut which will not be acceptable to Forest Department as well as environmentalists who have rejected the proposal outrightly.
Altaf who was also accompanied by the officers of Forest and Social Forestry Department has made it clear to the Revenue Minister that under the Forest act no motorable road is permissible from the area. However Minister agreed to allow the construction of a manual path which the villagers are not ready to accept also.
Facing the constant pressure from the people of the area Bhalla was trying his utmost to seek the clearance of the Forest Department and environmentalists for construction of the road but his plans dashed to ground after the Forest Minister rejected the proposal .
Sources said that Forest Ministry while rejecting the proposal for construction of motorable road has made it clear that any tampering with the city forest area will affect the ecology of the Jammu city and under the guidelines of Union Environment Ministry and State Forestry Act no permission can be granted in cutting of threes in the area for construction of a road.
Though the decision of the Forest Department has been highly appreciated by the Environmentalists who also want preservation of city forest area, the decision has annoyed Bhalla and the local people.a
Criticizing the Forest Minister, the locals accuse the Department for not taking any action against those politicians who have grabbed hundreds kanals of land belonging to city forest area in Sidhra and Bhathandi area while the Department is hell bent to not permit the construction of road via forest area in Mahamaya to ease the problems of poor villagers there.
The people also accuse the Minister of deliberately ignoring the construction of the road as the people are the voters of Congress and NC one way or the other wants to create hurdles for the Party.
