Faulty transmission lines, failing electric power supply tax Valley
12/3/2011 12:37:01 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 2: The appalling electric power supply situation in the Valley continues to trouble the locals despite promises of more power generating units and better distribution systems by the state government.
As the Valley reels under extreme cold wave conditions these days, frequent shutdowns, scheduled and unscheduled cuts, plus system failures have caused a lot of heartburn in most parts. The rural areas are the worst affected with the people agitating against frequent electricity failures and transformer breakdowns. At many places in the rural areas people stage protests blocking traffic on the roads leading to even more inconveniences to students, patients and office goers.
The scarcity of electric power is hitting many areas in Srinagar city and the villages where Shia Muslims are observing Muharram these days holding mourning meetings and congregations.
The senior engineers in the department have been blaming the northern grid authorities for taking unscheduled cuts during the peak hours which forces shutdowns on the power grids within the Valley. The 400 KV Kishenpur-Pampore and 220 KV Badgam transmission lines have developed major technical snags leading to erratic power cuts in the Valley.
"On Wednesday the 400 KV Kishenpur-Pampore transmission line developed a fault as a result of which the electric power supply to the Valley got disrupted to a great extent. This is the main transmission line that supplies electricity to the Valley from outside," Muzaffar Mattoo, chief engineer PDD confirmed. The chief engineer confirmed the fault has led to fluctuations in the power supply. Other senior engineers in the department said recurrence of such faults cannot be ruled out in the future since such faults usually occur in winter due to heavy snowfall. Repairing such faults could become difficult in the future unless there are some special arrangements between the PDD, PDC and PTC, these engineers said.
The chief engineer said whatever electricity the department has available at present was being supplied on priority to the Shia dominated areas. This has been refuted by the locals in many Shia dominated areas of Srinagar city and other parts of the Valley. "We are not getting any priority electric supply in the village this year. It is usual to have faults and shutdowns in the electric supply in our village even during the days of Muharram," said Wajahat Hussain who lives in Khour village of Pattan tehsil.
As the grim electric power supply taxes the common man, it appears the priorities of the state government are fixed somewhere else and not on providing relief to the common man in the Valley who is braving to face the bitter winter which has still not fully started in the Valley.
