NC, PDP fight enters new phase as Mufti opposes FDI | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 3: The fight between Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and National Conference (NC) entered a new phase yesterday with the former Chief Minister and PDP patron, Mufti Sayed opposing the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). This is the first time when the two rivals have locked horns for a non-political issue. Supporting the Congress proposal, the Chief Minister said: "No one is forcing FDI in retail down anybody's throat." A few days ago he said time for` no work no pay' for MPs if they fail to transact minimum hours of business. Mufti said, however, believes that the FDI would affect the poor and the daily wagers badly. "India must develop like America but we must appreciate the ground realities", he said while addressing a reporters at Udhampur. According to Mufti the FDI will relieve daily wagers of their livelihood. The BJP that has been accused of behaving like an ally of National Conference of late opposed the Congress move. A total shutdown was observed in protest here yesterday. Political circles have viewed Mufti's stand on FDI with keen interest. According to them it may be aimed at gaining BJP `sympathies'. Pertinent to mention the by-elections for seven assembly constituencies are round the corner and Mufti must have his eyes on elections. The seven seats fell vacant with the dismissal of seven BJP MLAs who were found guilty of cross voting during Legislative Council elections held early this year. |
