12/4/2011 8:56:30 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 4: Appealing to enhance the reserved seats in all major Universities and Colleges of Jammu and Kashmir, proportionate to their population in the State, the Gujjar Bakerwal- Scheduled Tribes today urged to provide ‘rational’ reservation to them in educational institutions , both in admission and recruitments.
In a programme organized here by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation- a frontal organization of Gujjars to discuss various aspects of “Reservation in J&K” the speakers from community said that the state government in 1991 had granted 10% reservation for them but professional colleges of state, Jammu University and Kashmir University provide only 6, 5 and 3% reservation for community students respectively in admission which is inadequate. They demanded increase in Gujjar quota, in tune with their population in the state as the Gujjars constitute 20% of total population of J&K.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary, Tribal Foundation said there is an urgent need to monitor and evaluate continuously the reservation and its implementation at public level by social groups and NGO’s.
He said social groups among Gujjars should launch an RTI movement to collect data regarding the implementation of the reservation in all sphere of life.
He said there should be a provision in BGSB University Rajouri, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Jammu and Islamic University of Science and Technology Kashmir to grant reservation to marginalized sect of society.
Talking about policies in respect of admissions, appointments to teaching and non-teaching positions in the universities, colleges speakers said that youth should struggle hard for their rights.
They urged Governor N N Vohra Chancellor of SMVDU and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Chancellor of BGSB University, Islamic University of Science and Technology with a plea to provide benefits of reservation in both Universities.
