Present regime has undermined democratic institutions: Mufti
Ex-Chairman of R S Pura Municipal Committee joins PDP
12/4/2011 9:01:37 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
R.S Pura, Dec 4: Former Chief Minister and patron of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today regretted that instead of addressing aspirations of the people, the present regime headed by National Conference has been brazenly indulged into gimmicks for its survival.
Addressing an impressive public meeting in which prominent leader and former Chairman of R S Pura Municipal Committee Bhushan Lal Dogra joined PDP along with hundreds of his supporters, Sayeed pointed out that during the last three years this regime has eroded and undermined all prestigious democratic institutions be it Assembly, local bodies or Panchayati Raj Institutions.
Pointing towards decision of the state government to postpone civic bodies’ elections without any reasons, he reminded the gathering that it was during the PDP led regime that elections of civic bodies were held after a gap of more than two decades. “Civic bodies elections were scheduled to be held in the month of February 2010 but the government has been delaying the elections without any reason”, he said and added that indifferent attitude to give powers to the Panchayats and inordinate delay in conducting civic bodies elections reflects dictatorial mindset of the present dispensation.
“With its assiduous efforts the PDP had restored peoples’ faith in the democracy but the present government headed by NC is brazenly trying to undermine the democratic institutions”, said Sayeed and regretted that this regime has undermined the dignity and sanctity of the highest democratic institution like Assembly. “No discussion is allowed to be held in the Assembly”, he pointed out.
Former Chief Minister reminded that District Development Boards (DDBs) were the institutions which were created to ensure balance development with the involvement of elected representatives but the present regime has also eroded such institutions also. “Pick and choose policy being adopted in release funds for the development activities”, he observed.
Coming down heavily on coalition regime for not treating all regions equally, he said that recruitment in police was done on pick and choose basis and this action of the government has created resentment among youth. He said that people of R S Pura, Suchetgarh and Bishnah have suffered a lot due tension on the border but the present regime has been discriminating with these regions. He reminded the gathering that various steps were taken during PDP led regime for the development of these border areas.
Pointing towards rampant corruption in the state, Sayeed observed that governance deficit was the main reason of increasing alienation of the people. “Corruption has crossed all limits due to lack of transparency and accountability in the government”, he said and pointed out the developmental projects started during PDP led regime were hanging in balance due to misgovernance of the present regime.
Reiterating resolve of his party to restore lasting peace in the state, he said that previous PDP-Congress regime had created an atmosphere of trust and confidence in the State.
Bhushan Lal Dogra, who joined PDP along with hundreds of his supporters, assured party leadership that he would work overtime to spread message of the party in this region.
