If every day were December 5!
12/5/2011 1:33:29 AM

Jammu: One hundred and six years ago, Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah was born in a village (Soura) near Srinagar. He died in 1981. Since then the National Conference observes his birth anniversary with enthusiastically. In the yester years the celebrations would remain confined to a function at his graveyard. But Omar Abdullah has made it a point to lay foundation stones of various projects on this very day. A locality where Omar Abdullah is scheduled to inaugurate a fountain tomorrow (December 5) got a facelift today. A commoner made a sarcastic comment. "If every day were December 5, the state would develop fast."
Last year, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of Zero Bridge in the summer capital on December 5. The historic bridge was closed for vehicular traffic several years ago when the new Abdullah Bridge was thrown open for public. The project was simply forgotten. Same day another foundation stone was laid barely 200 meters away from the Zero Bridge for re-construction of the gutted Tourist reception Centre building. This project was also forgotten.
A few days ago, a team of authorities led by the District Magistrate ordered demolition of make shift shops in the vicinity of Exhibition Grounds on the Silk Factory Road. The Chief Minister is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of a flyover tomorrow. The CM would then rush to dedicate the above mentioned fountain to public. He will then go to Bemina to inaugurate an office complex. He will do much more tomorrow to commemorate the 106 birth anniversary of his grandfather. The Director Information will accompany him to ensure maximum coverage of his activities in the local newspapers.
Sher-e-Kashmir will take some painful turns in his grave tomorrow. The projects launched on his previous anniversary are yet to take off. New projects will definitely add to the burden his progeny puts on him on December 5 every year.
