`CM has powers to lift AFSPA'

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 4: Responding to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mahbooba Mufti's comment on AFSPA withdrawal, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sought an explanation from her on micro blogging website twitter.
Mehbooba had yesterday said Omar should give "honourable exit" to the security forces and cautioned him about his proposal to revoke Armed Forces Special Powers Act from some parts of the state. She said. "The Chief Minister seeking revocation of AFSPA has taken everyone by surprise, even the Army."
Taking a dig at Mahbooba, Chief Minister asked whether she meant AFSPA should stay till the armed forces agree to its revocation.
Omar also tweeted, "I'd lift it (AFSPA) tomorrow if I was reasonably confident it won't be used to spread lies rumors & fear as news."
So Omar finally admitted that he had the powers to lift the AFSPA. This is what the former Home Secretary had said. If Omar has the powers to lift it, he should go ahead and repeal the draconian law. Why seek New Delhi's consent for something which he can himself do?
Omar has been blaming New Delhi for withholding sanction to prosecute erring men in uniform. But he has failed to bring the erring police men to justice. For their prosecution, he has to give sanction. Similarly he launched a campaign for revocation of AFSPA and gave an impression that New Delhi and various agencies were not lifting the law. Now he has spoken the truth for the first time in the past two months. Come on Chief Minister. You have the powers to lift AFSPA. Just go ahead and lift it.
