Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 5: Former Chief Minister and patron of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said his party has emerged as genuine, strong and credible voice of the people of Jammu and Kashmir through its convictions and visionary policies.
“The pro people visionary agenda of the party is formulated by incorporating wishes and aspirations of all sections of the society and we never compromised with our agenda for attaining power”, Sayeed said while addressing a function to welcome eminent political leader from Poonch Shah Mohammad Tantary who joined PDP today along with hundreds of his supporters.
Former Chief Minister said that it was result of the visionary political and economic agenda of the party that PDP has emerged as real voice of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and has earned credibility of the common masses through its convictions. Seeking cooperation of the people, he said that PDP with the help of the masses want to change destiny of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“It is the people who ensure peace, security and development in their respective areas so with the power of people I want to establish lasting peace in this region”, he said and pointed towards emergence of strong regional political powers in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and some other parts of the country where people have brought changes through their power.
“We are not here to topple the government. It is a small issue, but our aim is too high. Our aim is to get people of Jammu and Kashmir out of the present quagmire and change their fate,” he said. Sayeed reminded in the year 2002 when PDP-Congress government was formed there was total chaos and confusion in the state. “The PDP led regime has, not only rekindled a new hope among the state’s distressed, agonized and traumatized masses, but it had also devised and started implementing focused developmental strategies for every area of the State”, he reminded.
“After suffering decades of deprivation and neglect, for the first time all the regions and sub-regions of the state have started tasting development with the change of guard in 2002,”, he said. He said that despite having just 16 MLAs in 2002, PDP tried to change destiny of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“It was result of our conviction that successive governments at New Delhi supported whenever steps we had taken during our tenure”, he said and reminded that previous NDA regime headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee and present UPA government headed by Dr Manmohan Singh endorsed PDP’s view points on Kashmir.
He further said that his party has pioneered a political and economic agenda to establish sustainable peace in the subcontinent and to fulfill the wishes and aspirations of all regions and sub-regions of the State. "Establishing lasting peace and to consolidate the reconciliation process is on the top of the agenda of PDP ", he, adding "Our party, through its pro-peace policies, has consolidated reconciliation process and facilitated the efforts of establishing peace in this region".
He further mentioned that prevailing peace all along the borders from Kathua to Kargil was result of the reconciliatory policy pioneered and propagated by the PDP. He asserted that biggest achievements of PDP was that it has created conducive atmosphere for initiating peace process and taking Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) to normalize relations between India and Pakistan.
Mufti also sought a focused follow up of the Sachar Committee report saying Muslims continue to face scio-economic problems that has pushed most of them to the lowest strata of society. Though Prime Minister's initiative in appointing the Sachar Committee was a positive step to identify areas that need intervention, initiative, however, lacks a serious follow up, former state Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed said.
"Most recommendations made by the committee remain unimplemented," Sayeed said adding the Sachar Committee report established that Muslims are a community faced with problems of development and socio-economic deprivation. Patron of People's Democratic Party said the Muslims of the country continue to face socio-economic problems that have pushed most of them almost to the lowest strata of the society.
He said Muslims of India are a politically powerful community but unfortunately their problems are dealt with in fits and starts mostly around the time of elections. Sayeed said instead of making false promises, there is a need to have a national policy on minorities, especially Muslims, who constitute one of the most backward sections of our society.
He said the unfortunate demolition of Babri Masjid had caused a deep wound to the psyche of the Muslims in India but they responded with exemplary aplomb and sense of responsibility. Sayeed said the people of the country had through successive elections conveyed a clear message to communal forces to either fall in line with the secular constitution or remain out of the political mainstream.
"The faith Muslims of the country have reposed in the idea of India and its institutions should be reciprocated with empowerment now," he said. While speaking on the occasion, Tantray assured PDP leadership that he would work with dedication to spread message of party. He said that he has decided to join PDP due to the visionary policies being propagated by the party. Prominent among others who joined PDP included Peerzada Shahzad Malik, Ali Akbar Khan, Mohammad Akbar Daya, Choudhary Mohammad Shafi Malik, Choudhary Mohammad Yosuf, Dr Bashir Ahmed Malik, Raja Mumtaz Ahmed.
