AFSPA is deterrent for militants in J&K: Panun Kashmir
12/5/2011 9:21:41 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 5: Panun Kashmir (PK), an organisation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits today said that revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is against the interests of the nationalist forces as it acts as deterrent for the militants.
While opposing any move of the central government to consider revoking the act from the state, which gives sweeping powers to the army to detain people, PK expressed concern over the recent statements by various political parties over the issue.
Addressing a meeting of the workers, PK president Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo said that the recent statements by various political leaders tend to suggest that they are vying with each other to score brownie points over the issue of AFSPA.
“The Special Powers Act has helped the security forces gain an effective control over the large scale insurgency that had engulfed the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The lifting or dilution of the Act in any manner would compromise the effectiveness of the forces to control militancy”, he said.
Chrungoo alleged that the constant politicking on the issue has potential to demoralize the security forces. “Moreover, the security related issues cannot be made subservient to the expedient agenda of the political parties. Any tampering or partial lifting of AFSPA is tantamount to almost lowering of guard and could give a lease of life to the Pak abetted terror on the Indian soil”, he said.
PK has said that security forces have an impeccable human rights record and the citizens of the country see them as saviours. Speaking on the occasion, national spokesperson of the party, Virender Raina said that the debate over lifting or dilution of the Act must end for good in the larger interests of the country.
“Sovereign issues of a nation are paramount and cannot be made a topic for partisan politics and fate and future of the Kashmiri Pandits is linked with their geo-political aspirations”, he said.
PK has further said that the issues of livelihood cannot be linked with the issues of political future of a community. “The members of the community continue to live as refugees in their own country and this is a testimony of the state’s failure towards its own citizens”, said Raina. Organisation has decided to organise seminars and exhibitions depicting the plight of the Pandits in commemoration of the historic Margdarshan Resolution.
