| Kashmir is in news for right or wrong reasons | | | Kashmir is in news.Kashmir remains in news for right or wrong reasons.It is only Kashmir that makes news.And it is Kashmir news that sells across the world.People may say that Kashmir remains in news because of its scenic views,verdent slopes,dancing cascades,snow capped mountain peaks.No,not for its sights and scenes.Yes,Mughal gardens,tourist resorts like Pahalgam,Gulmarg,Kokernag and other spots have remained in news but whatever beauty the valley has stands eclipsed by 21-year long militancy related violence.Violence and the unsettled Kashmir issue are topics for news stories,features and newspaper and magazine articles.If you have a seminar on AIDS the Kashmir issue is bound to figure.If you have a conference on world religion one speaker or the other may not hesitate speaking about the Kashmir issue.You have long debates in the Pakistan National Assembly,in the Indian Parliament and in the Assemblies in Jammu and Kashmir and in Muzaffarabad and each debate touches the Kashmir issue.
If one reads the deliberations in several sessions of the United Nations General Assembly or the Security Council one may find that the Kashmir issue usually figures for more time than any other issue or topic.The Kashmir issue is the product of a legacy of the partition and it is since 1947 that India and Pakistan have measured swords on many occasions while dealing with the Kashmir issue.The issue had defied a settlement.It has defied a solution because Pakistan wants the land,which it calls its life-line,and India unwilling to oblige Pakistan on the plea that under the Instrument of Accession Jammu and Kashmir has become part of India after the accession agreement was ratified by the reprsentatives of the people of the state.In fact if the Kashmir issue hangs fire it is because of the UN resolution which provides for holding a plebiscite for determining the wishes of the people of the state.In the name of Kashmir there has been a lot of bloodshed,destruction and discomfort for the people on either side of the LOC. Islamabad does not seem to be worried or bothered about it because it has to keep the Kashmir issue alive which helps it to divert peoples' attention from the real internal problems.
If there is anyone who has a solution for the issue it is Dr Farooq Abdullah.In fact he has made the solution as simple and practical as can be possible.He says that "Pakistan has to accept that it cannot get back Kashmir and India has to accept that it cannot get back occupied Kashmir."This 21-word statement is quite meaningful in the sense it can be the only possible means of settlement.Once Islamabad and New Delhi accept Farooq's idea peace can to restored to the South Asian region within a minute.Will Islamabad listen to Farooq Abdullah ? Chances are remote because over the years Kashmir has become a land for international conspiracies and intrigues.If Islamabad changes its stance and starts buidling bridges with New Delhi,will China allow it ?Possibly Beijing would prevail upon Islamabad to allow the Kashmir issue to remain unsettled because unsettled Kashmir issue gives a chance to other countries,including China,America,to extend their areas of influence.With tension growing between India and Pakistan New Delhi and Islamabad have to bank on military aid from Washington and other countries.After the USA China is the next major supplier of arms and ammunition to Pakistan. Let Islamabad realise that Pakistan's economy stands shattered only because of its aid to terror and anti-India activities.
