EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Dec 6 (KNS): State government is all set to hold municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir in March next year and arrangements for the polls are being finalized, sources told KNS.
They said elections would be held on party basis and concerned departments have been asked to finalize the poll arrangements soon.
The elections would be held in Jammu, Srinagar and in all municipal committees and municipal councils of the state.
Minister of State for Home and Urban Development, Nasir Aslam Wani told KNS that all the arrangements have been almost completed for the municipal election and the schedule for the elections have been accepted.
He said the notification would be issued only after the cabinet meeting will give approval to the agenda. Wani told KNS that the number of the seats have been increased from 68 to 75 in Srinagar, whereas in Jammu the number has been increased to 75 from 72.
“Population in both the cities has increased in the last few years. So seats had to be enhanced accordingly,” he added.
The MoS Home also said that the government was hopeful that the people will in large numbers take part in the municipal elections which will address the basic requirements and problems of the citizens.
He said that the opposition PDP had launched propaganda that government was not serious in holding municipal polls. “They (PDP) had said it last year also that the government isn’t serious in holding panchayat polls. Now the reality is before everybody,” Wani added.
To UJC chairman Syed Salah-ud-Din’s recent statement that the militants have nothing to do with Municipal or Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the MoS Home said, “Despite that there will be foolproof security arrangements for the elections.”
The municipal elections are going to be held in the state almost a year late. Last municipal elections were held during the tenure of former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s PDP-Congress alliance government in 2005. And during January 2005 municipal elections only 75 seats went to polls. Now with more 17 seats added, the number is 92 in Jammu and Srinagar including other municipal areas.
