Opposing FDI in retail trade, Mufti Syed wins traders' goodwill
12/6/2011 11:46:37 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 6: People's Democratic Party (PDP) patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Syed has won a huge constituency of supporters and well wishers for himself in the traders community of the State by opposing FDI in retail trade.
As a shrewd politician the Mufti has always played his cards very well mainly because he has always remained rooted in the ground and not made any imaginary flights into the high cloud. He has said the allowing of FDI in retail trade would not only create a monopoly empire of foreign companies over the retail trade industry in the State but would also result in the prices of essential commodities being dictated from outside the State and even the country.
Those supporting the FDI in retail trade have perhaps not understood the fact that once allowed, even the support prices of food grains would be dictated and announced from outside the country. It would be in the corporate headquarters of the multi-national companies controlling our retail trade directly that the support prices for Paddy, Wheat and other foodstuffs would be determined and announced. Not that the middle and lower classes of retail traders in Jammu and Kashmir would only be affected if FDI in retail trade is allowed, they would simply be wiped out of the market and their families forced to starvation and misery. This has been fully understood by Mufti Mohammad Syed because his intention and aim is to earn the goodwill of the common man in the State with whose support he can once again come to rule the place. It is strange that those who speak in favour of allowing FDI in retail trade are saying it would end the monopoly of the local traders on dictating the prices of commodities. This is a self-defeating argument. The very purpose of allowing FDI in retail trade is to create a single giant monopoly by pushing out all other small and minor competitors from the markets. It is like allowing the sharks to take over by arguing that this has been done to end the monopoly of the small fish. Mufti Mohammad Syed has always had an issue-based approach to problems. He has not been one of those politicians who react to situations in a knee jerk manner and later start regretting their reaction or even blaming their political adversaries for generating wrong reactions by pushing them to the wall. Cool as a cucumber, Mufti Syed is the most circumspect politician in the State. He does not offer off the cuff remarks which would have to be regretted later. In his long political career, Syed has not even once had to retract his statements. That is something no other politician in the State has been able to ensure.
