Inter-state vehicle lifters’ gang busted, 23 vehicles recovered

JAMMU, Dec 7:In a major breakthrough, Jammu Police have busted an inter-state gang of vehicle lifters operating in winter capital of the state and recovered 23 vehicles from their possession.
“As a part of special drive launched against the burglars and vehicle lifters, an inter-state gang operating in Jammu was busted and three persons were arrested. Twenty-three vehicles were recovered from their possession on their disclosure,” J S Johar, Superintendent of Police, Jammu North told reporters at a press conference here today.
Johar said following a number of complaints lodged regarding vehicle thefts from different areas, a special team was constituted comprising SDPO West Dy SP Rouf Lone, SHO Police Station Janipur Tahir Hussain, SIs Satyender Singh and Deepak Pathania.
“The team on specific inputs apprehended a suspect identified as Rahil Kapahi alias Cheeku, resident of Malhotra Mohalla. During interrogation, he disclosed two more names -- Akash Malhotra, resident of Malhotra Mohalla, Purani Mandi and Javed Ahmed, resident of Bijbehara in Anantnag district of Kashmir,” Johar said.
The trio was arrested from Jammu city and Bijbehara, Anantnag respectively, police said
During investigations, the accused revealed about the numbers of theft and on their disclosure, 20 motobikes, two scooters and a car was recovered from different locations.
“The accused used to borrow the vehicle for a ride from the persons familiar to them. After taking the vehicles, they used to prepare their duplicate keys and steal them as and when they get a suitable opportunity,’’ police added.
The SP said cases under various FIRs and sections have been registered at various police stations of the winter capital and further sustained interrogation of the arrested thieves is going on to ascertain their involvement in other cases and to identify other associates.
More recoveries/revelations regarding motor-vehicle thefts are expected, he added.
