Child Labour a curse on society
12/7/2011 9:34:31 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
RAJOURI, Dec 7:Keeping in view the ill effects of labour work on physical and mental health of children particularly those who are below 15 years of age, a ban on child labour is in place in the entire country including J&K.
However, the State Government’s lack of authority to implement the ban on child labour strictly is not giving the desired results and the menace instead of vanishing is still grooming as a large number of children below 15 particularly boys can be seen involved in labour work.
These children work on hotels, shops, tea stalls, as cleaners and conductors of passengers and goods carrying vehicles.
These lesser known children whose smooth hands should have books, pencils and need care are forced to wash utensils in hotels and tea stalls, are collecting fare from passengers in vehicles and doing other labour works largely because of poor implementation of ban on child labour and an overall negligence of Govt authorities. Although such children are poor and not having required finance to avail educational facilities but they also possess equal rights as that of a rich child. It is such an ugly scene to see that a child washing utensils in a hotel early in the morning and children of same age group are wearing bags and going to school passing in front of that hotel. This totally reflects the gap between poor and rich whereas it also shows failure of Govt authorities on ground level because formulation of an Act does not matter instead it's implementation on ground level matters the most.
Approximately 23 million children under the age of 15 are working full time to make a living, and to support their families. The child labourers often work in harsh conditions.
A young girl sells popcorn on a sidewalk in Rajouri, the day before a federal ban went into effect in India prohibiting employers from hiring children under 14 to work as maids or in restaurants, tea shops, hotels, or roadside eateries.
