Measures helped to maintain peace during 2011 summer in valley: IGP | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Dec 7: A number of measures taken by the authorities have helped to maintain peace during the 2011 summer in the Kashmir Valley, Inspector General of Police (IGP) S M Sahai said here today. Inspector General of Police (IGP) S M Sahai said 2010 summer had witnessed massive clashes in the Valley between demonstrators and riot police, resulting in loss of lives and damage to property. However, this year with the active cooperation of the people the summer season passed off peacefully with a record number of more than 10 lakhs tourists visited the Valley, he said. Recalling the last summer when he took over as Kashmir police chief, Sahai said, "Our first priority was to reopen educational institutions which were remained closed because of strike and violence." "Since the future of our youths was involved, we sought the help of parents and school management," he said, adding despite threats parents cooperated and sent their children to schools and colleges. Sahai said a number of school buses were targeted and some students also got injured in stone pelting by miscreants. However, "we succeeded to bring back the education system on track," he added. The IGP said, "We arrested people, including youths, who were indulging in stone pelting and arson. However, majority of them were released after their parents agreed that they will not indulge in such activities in future."
