Omar tweets on cross border issues
12/7/2011 11:50:16 PM
Whenever Omar Abdullah tweets he becomes a great newsmaker. His habit of tweeting has become a sort of addiction for him. That is the reason for Omar Abdullah to touch political issues concerning not only his state and the country but to the global level. One would have understood his problem if he would tweet on matters connecting Pakistan because Islamabad and its agencies have been instrumental for the dance of death and destruction in Jammu and Kashmir. Of late Chinese policies vis-a-vis India seem to disturb Omar Abdullah who has been left with no other alternative but to tweet over what he calls lack of spine on the part of New Delhi in dealing with Beijing. In fact Omar wants New Delhi to follow a tit-for-tat policy vis-a-vis China. Omar says that China has been treating Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory and hence wants India to question China's policy on Taiwan. He wants New Delhi to confront Bejing's utterances on Arunachal Pradesh and its policy of encroachment in Ladakh. He wants New Delhi to question illegal occupation of Tibet by China.
Omar Abdullah is not totally right when he says that India is spineless while dealing with Pakistan and China. Does it mean that India should show spine while confronting China and Pakistan? Well for the last over 60 years New Delhi has been dealing with Islamabad and Beijing in such a way as could promote friendly ties. Had New Delhi adopted belligerent postures against Beijing and Islamabad there would have been bigger tensions, conflicts and crisis. Since the Hindi-Chini bhai bhai era is over New Delhi and Beijing continue to walk on a thin razor's edge. Just one slight mistake can lead to bigger convulsions and conflicts. India has shown spine while dealing with Pakistan which is evident by the way New Delhi succeeded in repulsing four Pakistani invasions, including the Kargil conflict. Omar's suggestion on showing spine while dealing with China and Pakistan, if implemented, can invite serious problems for India. India is nuclear but that does not give it the freedom to be reckless in dealing with its immediate neighbours which too are nuclear powers. That one need not ignore China being ahead of India as far as its military might and economic strength are concerned. No doubt India is not as weak, militarily, as it was in 1962 when China invaded its border belt in Northeast, it is yet to develop to match the Chinese military strength.
Hence New Delhi has to deal with Beijing plitically and not militarily. The growing military link-up between Islamabad and Beijing should be a matter of concern for New Delhi. In the context of this developoment India has to think twice before causing any irritation or annoying China. If one takes into account various political and military development in China and Pakistan one will have no hesitation in calling these two neighbours of India as rogue states. Thus to expect reason from the rogue states is unimaginable. Omar needs to be told that India needs to bank on diplomacy instead of dictation while dealing with China and Pakistan. Yes, Washington dictates terms to other countries because it has developed defence and economic resources to such an extent that it can act as the headmaster in the world affairs. It is a super power which it has demonstrated during the Korean conflict. It has displayed its missile power while trying to contain terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq. China does not have great extra-territorial ambitions in India and if it talks about Arunachal Pradesh and about the border dispute with India it aims at keeping New delhi under check so that it does not give a long rope to the Dalai Lama for kicking up severe anti-China campaign in India. Hence Omar needs to tweet on the reasons for increase in corruption, unemployment, poor utilisations of development funds instead of touching highly sensitive issues.
