Garbage burning a routine despite official ban | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 08:Garbage burning, which is a routine in Jammu and the villages around it, is infact fatal for humans. Though its burning is prohibited by the government, people do it openly here without the fear of law enforcing agencies. While they do so, they pollute the atmosphere around them. Despite knowing the fact that garbage burning is hazardous for health, people burn accumulated refuse in some localities. At some places, even JMC safai karamcharis are seen burning accumulated garbage instead of dumping it at the designated place. Prof D S Sambyal of chemistry department of Jammu University said people ought to understand that by burning garbage they were not only putting themselves in danger but their neighbours too. When garbage burns, it produces carbon monoxide. "If carbon monoxide is inhaled, it combines with haemoglobin to form carboxy haeomoglobin which reduces its capacity to carry oxygyn in the blood," he added. Prof Sambyal said if the quantity of inhaled carbon monoxide was more, it could lead to the death of a man. When contacted, a JMC official said the field staff of the corporation had been instructed to ensure that people did not burn the refuse at homes. He said there was also a provision of imposing a fine on the people who burnt garbage at homes. The official said the field staff, including safai karamcharis, had also been directed not to set ablaze refuse in streets, or by roadsides. It was to be taken in JMC vehicles to the designated place, he asserted. Prof Sambyal said mohalla committees should be formed to check this menace. It would also help keep the environment clean, he added.
