Govt to upgrade rural infra at par with urban areas: Sham

AKHNOOR, DECEMBER 8- Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma has said that present Government headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has given focused attention to upgrade the rural infrastructure at par with urban areas across the State.
Addressing a largely attended public meeting here today, the Minister said measures initiated by the Government during the past three years have started giving results on ground and change has been acknowledged by the people.
He said main thrust of the Government was on the improvement of road connectivity, PHE schemes, education, PDD and health sector, which hold key to the development and prosperity of people. During the past three years a massive development has taken place in these sectors.
“The major achievement of the present government was to successful completion of Panchayat elections in the State after a long gap. This will enable speedy development of rural areas with the active involvement of the elected representatives after fixing the priorities”, he said and added that the Sarpanchs, Panchs will be fully empowered to make them more responsive and accountable to ensure development of their respective areas.
He asked them to be more transparent and discharge their responsibilities with honesty and dedication. He stressed on creating awareness among the people about the government schemes so that the deserving beneficiaries can avail the benefits of such schemes. He asked them to focus on the MGNREGA scheme which has vast scope for development of rural areas coupled with employment to the people. Sarpanchs, Panchs should also work for social reforms in order to eradicate various social evils from the society. He also stressed for close coordination with the administration for achieving desired goals.
Regarding protection of land located along the right bank of Chenab River, the Minister said that he will make a fresh survey of the affected areas along with a team of officers shortly and chalk out a strategy to deal with the threat of flash floods during the summer months. He said in view of the low discharge of water in the Chenab River, necessary execution of works will be carried out during the winter season.
Responding to the demands of the people of far-flung areas of Akhnoor, the Minister said that Government was aware of the problems of the people and all out efforts are being made to address them in a systematic manner. He directed the officers to attend people’s problems on priority and make the ground level functionaries pro-active to provide improved services in the far-off areas.
Local Congress leaders, Sectoral Officers of various departments, Sarpanchs, Panchs and a large number of people from different parts of Akhnoor were present in the meeting.
