Sahni in no mood to leave early, new VC likely by Jan 2012 | | | Mishu Gupta JAMMU, Dec 9: In complete contrast to rumor spread by his close confidents, Vice-Chancellor Jammu University (JU) Prof. Varun Sahni, whose tenure ended on December 7, is in no mood to leave early. Sources said that despite making his intentions known to all in the university, Sahni wants an extension, at least for a year. They added that months before his tenure actually came to an end, Sahni had been telling his close confidents about his plans of leaving the university as and when the d-day arrives but December 7, 2011 has passed and Sahni is now seeking advice from Raj Bhawan. In a letter addressed to Principal Secretary to Governor N.N.Vohra, sources said that VC's office, instead of informing Raj Bhawan about Sahni's desire of leaving by first flight on December 10, 2011; sought advice from Chancellor's office. They disclosed that Raj Bhawan needs not to even reply to this letter of JU VC since act clearly states that until new VC is not appointed; incumbent would continue to discharge his duties. They further said that if Sahni would have been in hurry, he would have left and handed over charge to Commissioner/Secretary Higher Education by seeking permission from the government for the same. However, he preferred otherwise and if sources in Raj Bhawan are to be believed, Sahni wants extension for a year. They added that Sahni is likely to continue, the way VC of Islamic University Kashmir Prof. Siddiq Wahid continued for years without any formal orders. Sources informed Early Times that Prof. Varun Sahni today met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for around twenty minutes and extended him an invitation for a programme being held in Bhaderwah campus of Jammu University. They revealed that Sahni informed Omar about culmination of his tenure and asked him to ensure that process of finding his successor is speeded up and he is relieved of his duties at the earliest. Omar reportedly assured Sahni that he would take up the issue with Governor N.N.Vohra and ensure that new vice-chancellor takes over at the earliest. Sources said that after returning from the Chief Minister's office, Sahni resumed office. They disclosed that until the selection committee does not finalize name of the next VC of Jammu University, Sahni would continue as acting VC. Meanwhile, selection panel constituted by Governor N.N. Vohra, in his capacity as Chancellor of Jammu University, has so far neither found a suitable candidate nor shortlisted probable candidates. The three-member Search committee is headed by President, South Asian University, New Delhi Professor G.K.Chadha while Vice-Chancellor of Central University Jammu Dr. S.S.Bloeria and Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Rajasthan Prof. M.M.Salunkhe are its other two members. In its first meeting at New Delhi last week, Sources said that search committee scrutinized resumes of all the applicants, whose total number is approximately 60. More than 20 Professors of Jammu University are among the applicants even as a few of them don't fulfill the eligibility criteria for the position, sources added. The local applicants for the top position include Prof R D Sharma, Prof Rajiv Gupta, Prof B P S Sehgal, Prof Kuldeep Sharma, Prof Keshav Sharma, Prof Anju Bhasin, Prof Meena Sharma and others. Sources hint that the Search committee members seem not impressed with the local candidates in respect of their bio-data whereas on the other hand, majority of the non-local candidates look better in comparison. As short listing of candidates has not yet been initiated by the committee, which is likely to meet again next week, sources said that the process for final selection of the Vice-Chancellor may take at least a month. Committee will submit a panel of probably three short listed candidates to Governor N.N.Vohra for a final selection of any one by the end of this month. |
