Broken bones, shattered window panes, mauled scribes | NC and human rights | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 9: Former Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) president, Dr Abdullah today said his party has been a champion of human rights from the very beginning. While NC history is not rosy, the current regime led by NC has been an era of "broken bones and shattered window panes." A poor man from Lachmanpora, Batmaloo who lost his daughter during last year's agitation said, "Omar's regime has been an era of broken bones and shattered window panes. Pertinent to mention 120 persons, mostly school going children got killed last year. "If this is democracy, the people of Jammu Kashmir do not need it", he said. The ruthlessness shown by the police during last year's agitation has evoked a severe comment from the union Government. Omar was directed to go to the people. He was also accused of governance deficit and trust deficit. The Union Home Ministry also felt that A past incident that demolishes Farooq's tall claims reflects NC's regard for human rights. A former member of Mirwaiz Umer Farooq's Awami Action Committee was a young man when Sher-e-Kashmir took over the emergency administration of the state in 1947. `Unfortunately' he belonged to a circle that opposed Sher-e-Kashmir and his policies. A police officer arrested him and tortured him in a `unique' way. He ironed his back. The mark is still there to tell the present generation how NC championed the cause of human rights during those fateful days. NC continued to `champion the noble' cause first by framing the Public Safety Act (PSA) then by extending POTA to the state and finally by forming the special operations group (SOG). And last but not the least, during this year's budget session three privilege motions were moved against senior scribes. The journalists were attacked more than twenty times since last year's agitation.
