Will Omar survive January 5 deadline? | Rotational CM issue | | Asif Iqbal Naik Jammu, Dec 9: Aware of the brewing resentment within the Congress leadership/Party workers in Jammu and Kashmir over the working style of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the resulting demand for the replacement of the Chief Minister by a Congress candidate, UPA chairperson Ms Sonia Gandhi has is understood to have started consulting senior party leaders before she takes a final decision anytime after ongoing winter session of the Parliament ends on December 22. As the first step in this direction , sources said Mrs. Gandhi held back to back meeting with two senior Congress leaders from Jammu and Kashmir including Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and JKPCC President Saif-ud-Din Soz. In a one on one meeting with Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saif-ud-Din Soz at her 10 Janpath residence couple of days ago, Mrs. Gandhi is believed to have discussed the issue related to Jammu and Kashmir including rotational Chief Minister issue and possible upcoming proposed cabinet reshuffle. Among the two Congress leaders, Saif-ud-Soz clearly supports the move for the rotational Chief Minister, whereas Mr. Azad is cautious choosing words, but with the passage of time and particularly after his visit to Bhaderwah, Azad's approach seems at least partially tilting in a different direction that can be judged from Azad's statement in Bhaderwah in which he (Azad) slammed Omar Abdullah Government for lack of development in Chenab region including Azad's home constituency Bhaderwah. If loyalist close to Azad are be believed, Azad has already hinted his willingness to return to state politics after several party workers pledged before him and narrated the tale of sorrows faced by the Congress party workers at the hands of the National Conference leaders and Ministers during Omar Abdullah tenure. The sources close to Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Mr. Azad had assured them that he will reconsider his previous decision in which he had decided not to return to J & K politics. The sources said that Azad is ready to offer his services in Jammu and Kashmir, once the party decides. While on the other hand, the JKPCC President has started exerting pressure on the UPA leadership over the issue of Rotational Chief Minister in Jammu and Kashmir and during his stay in New Delhi, Mr. Soz held a series of meetings with several Congress leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. As already reported, Mrs. Gandhi after receiving inputs from independent sources about the brewing resentment within the Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir has decided to take a final call over the rotational Chief Minister issue after the ongoing parliament session ends on 22 December, 2011. The sources within the Congress said that the change in Mrs. Gandhi stand came after several party leaders called on her in recent past and expressed their resentment over the ill treatment meted out to Congress party leaders and workers by the National Conference leadership including Ministers/Chief Minister. The tug of war between the two coalition partners in Jammu and Kashmir hits at a new low in recent past and the leaders from both the sides have traded guns at each other over various issues like AFSPA, DDA and amendment in RPC. The meeting between Soz and Mrs. Gandhi is his 2nd meet with the UPA chairperson in last couple of weeks. Omar Abdullah too called on UPA Chairperson on November 14 and held a discussion over various issues with her. During his meeting with Mrs. Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders including P Chidambaram, Pranab Mukherjee, Omar tried to create a consensus over issues like AFSPA and strengthening of bonds between the coalition partners. But the insiders believe the senior party leaders want to carry on with Omar Abdullah keeping in view the upcoming elections in UP and other states, but on the other hand the Congress party is facing revolt from its own party workers in Jammu and Kashmir. Congress party at this stage does not want to face any standoff with the majority of its elected representatives as well as with the party workers since the party high command fears a break-up in the party which they want to avoid in any case, since the party workers have already informed loudly that they are unhappy with the functioning of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Even though the party leadership including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have already said that they have great respect and honor for the feelings and the sentiments of party workers who have worked with dedication since so many years to strengthen the Congress party at gross roots level in Jammu and Kashmir. The coalition government which is scheduled to complete its half tenure on January 5 next year is presently battling for its survival after state Congress party leadership has put a strong case for rotational Chief Minister before central leadership thus raising several questions in the minds of the common people, the most important being whether or not the Omar led Govt survives the January 5 deadline.
