VHP asks SASB not to decide Amarnath yatra date, duration | | | Jammu, Dec 10: Asking Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) to desist from deciding date of commencement of next year’s Amarnath yatra and its duration, the VHP today said the matter should be left to Hindu religious leaders and priests. "We ask SASB and the Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra to desist from deciding the dates of the commencement of annual Amarnath yatra and its duration. It should be left to Hindu religious leaders and priests," VHP national spokesperson Surinder Jain told reporters here. If the board takes decision with regard to these issues, we will launch a nationwide agitation, he said. "The date of commencement of the yatra, its duration and holding of prayers and rituals are religious issue and board should not interfere into it...it is a matter of religious leaders of the community to decide," Jain said. The board was set up to take care of the facilitation of the yatra and it should look into the arrangements of the yatra, security and other facilities, he said. SASB this year had reduced the duration of the pilgrimage to Amarnath by 15 days, apprehending bad weather. The yatra, which starts every year from the mid-June and continue till September, this year had commenced on June 29. Jain, who met SASB Chief Executive Officer R K Goyal and presented the memorandum to the Governor, who is also the Chairman of the board, said it is unfortunate that despite repeated efforts Vohra did not meet them to discuss the issue.
