Lecture on gender inequality organised | | | JAMMU, Dec 10: To commemorate the Human Rights day, Center for Women Studies of MIER College of Education organized a guest lecture on the topic “Gender Inequality and Rights of Women”. Associate Professor, Department of Law, Jammu University, Dr. Arvind was the main speaker on the occasion. Dr. Renu Gupta, Director MIER Group of Institutions presided over the function. Dr. Jasrotia, in his address enlightened the participants about the concept of Human Rights. He emphasized that human rights are inherent, inalienable and universal and it is our duty as well as right to uphold them. He informed the audience about the evolution of human rights both at the international and the Indian level and its kinds elaborating upon the Preamble, the fundamental rights, the directive principles and the fundamental duties enshrined in our constitution in the context of Human Rights. He also talked about the women perspective, the crimes against women and the special acts for women and also informed about the CEDAW i.e. Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (1979). He also said that the special provisions for women do not indicate their segregation but it is a process of negating the wrongful acts done against them and consequently bringing them to the just human level. The lecture was followed by an open session wherein the audience interacted with the resource person freely and got their queries answered in a very lucid manner. The Chief Guest also inaugurated the Wall Magazine maintained by the CWS wing. In her presidential address Dr. Renu Gupta said that legal reforms in India have a long history. First significant legal reforms vis-a-vis women’s rights were initiated in the colonial period. “Large participation in the national movement gave women visibility. It was the second wave in 1980’s that rights language was articulated and gained legitimacy and a spate of legal reforms were initiated”, she said. Gupta said, “In fact we need to look at human rights framework through a gender lens and from women’s perspective, women get differently affected because of their gender”. In the end, Samriti Singh, Project Officer CWS presented the formal vote of thanks. The programme was conducted by Sunita Singh, student of B. Ed, MIER College.
