Doordarshan scripts narrow win over Engineers in Christmas Cup

JAMMU, Dec 10: In a thrilling contest, Doordarshan XI registered a narrow win by 4 runs over Engineers XI in the Christmas Cup T20 Cricket Tournament, which got underway at Parade ground, here today.
The tournament is being organised by All J&K Christian United Federation with an objective to celebrate Christmas jointly through the medium of sports.
The tournament was inaugurated by Gulzar Singh Slathia, Inspector General of Police (Armed) in an impressive and colourful function, while Member Legislative Assembly (MLC) Syed Asgar Ali presided over the function. The inaugural function was made colourful by two Christmas Carol Songs presented by Nissi the Grouse Band and Lion of Judah, besides the opening prayers by Rev Sohan Lal.
While speaking on the occasion, the chief guest Slathia lavished praise on the organisers and said that such events help in channelizing the energy of youth, to stop them not to derail from the mainstream. He further said that sports and games play a pivotal role in discipline building.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Pastor Showkat Peter, RK Bhat, Superintendent of Police, Sheikh Zahoor Ahmed, president, Muslim Welfare Federation, Nicodemus, president All J&K Christian United Federation, Saleem Gill, former MLC, Rajesh Gill, former Ranji Trophy player, Rajesh Dhar and Rakesh Koul.
Earlier, skipper of the Engineers XI, Ravi Kant Puri won the toss and elected to field first on what usually behaves like a good batting strip.
Batting first, Doordarshan XI scored 124 for all in 19.5 overs in a T20 format. Anoop Wattal was the top scorer with 28 runs, while Rajiv and Ravinder Singh contributed 21 and 18 runs respectively. Shahid took 2 wickets for Engineers XI, while Ravi Kant and Rimpoo claimed one wicket each.
In reply, Engineers XI made 120 for 8 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs to end the match to end the match with an excited finish as the chasers needed 4 to win on the last ball of the match and the striker failed to score any run, thus lost the match by 4 runs. Shahid played a decent innings of 34 runs, while Ravi Kant and Zeeshan chipped in with 14 and 13 runs respectively. Ravinder Singh was the wrecker-in-chief for Doordarshan XI, scalping 3 important wickets in his four overs, while Girdari, Bunty and Shama claimed one wicket apiece. Ravinder Singh of Doordarshan XI was adjudged man of the match for his all-round performance.
The match was officiated by BCCI Level-A umpires Sudhir Singh and Harbinder Singh, while Yogesh Sharma acted as the scorer and Rakesh Pandita as commentator.
Tomorrow’s fixture: Municipal Commissioner XI to face Aircel XI at 8:30 am, while JKP XI will lock horns with Doordarshan XI at 12:30 pm.
