Jammu leadership has gone dormant, why? | BAD OMAN | | Neha Jammu, Dec 10: Jammu leadership has gone totally dormant and at a time when the Kashmiri leadership has turned highly vocal and active. The NC president and Union Minister, Farooq Abdullah, is speaking almost everyday and working for the cause of Kashmir and the Kashmiri people, notwithstanding his double-speak and shifting stand. He is also making common cause with Pakistan and suggesting that New Delhi must engage Islamabad to befriend the Pakistanis for ensuring peace in the region. Besides, he is demanding a change in the Indian political system that would control democracy. He is suggesting that the time has come for "controlled democracy". His son and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is addressing public rallies and airing views similar to the ones being preached by his father. He has virtually overawed and marginalized the Congress party, his coalition partner, unleashed a no-holds-barred campaign against the AFSPA and the Army. PDP leaders Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter and party president Mehbooba Mufti have also intensified their activities. Their activities are directed both towards the NC and New Delhi. They are preparing ground for ousting the Abdullah dynasty and regaing political power in the state. They are carrying out campaign both in Kashmir and Jammu and their objective is to mobilize public opinion in favour of what they stand for. As for the separatists, they are as active today as they were in the past. They are virtually dictating turns and setting the agenda, with the NC-led government doing all that it can to implement the same. Take, for example, their stand on the Army and AFSPA and the attitude of the so-called mainstream Kashmiri leadership towards it. Also consider the attitude of the separatists towards Dogra certificate and the manner in which the NC-led coalition government withdrew the order concerning the issuance of Dogra certificate. Similarly, take into consideration the chief minister's suggestion that his government would amend the Ranbir Penal Code to bring it at par with the Indian Criminal Procedure Code in order to give legal protection to the armed forces involved in counter-insurgency operations, the separatists' opposition to the proposal and the resultant chief minister's decision not to go ahead. The point is that the so-called mainstream Kashmiri leaders and the separatists are treading almost the same path. The activities of the so-called mainstream Kashmiri leaders should have made the Jammu leadership to sit up and devise a strategy to controvert the pernicious influence of the activities undertaken by their counterparts in the Valley. But nothing of this sort has happened. On the contrary, the Jammu leadership has gone dormant. The BJP is not speaking for quite sometime now. It is in a state of paralysis. It is also gripped by ego clashes and very serious rivalries. Seven of the eleven BJP MLAs are out of the party and they are doing their best to destroy their parent organization. The remaining four MLAs have also lost their way. It appears. There is a view that two of the four BJP MLAs are overtly and covertly supporting the NC. As for the BJP leadership and organization, less said the better. There is no leader in the party who has the ability and capability of identifying himself with the people and the people's mood. In fact, the entire BJP leadership is a dejected and worthless lot, just incompetent to handle the party affairs and mobilize public opinion. The Panthers Party leadership, which had in January this year adopted with much fanfare Agenda 2011, has also become suddenly inactive. It has completely forgotten its agenda. It is devoid of any political activity. It, like the BJP, is only issuing statements from time to time to remain in news. It has, like the BJP, failed to realize that it has to fight on two fronts: fight for the Jammu's empowerment and fight against those seeking to dismember India and give a particular type of orientation to the state polity. As for the Jammu-based Congress, NC leaders, less said the better. Suffice it to say that they represent Kashmir and Kashmiri interests in Jammu and that they have nothing to do with the people of Jammu province. They simply preach fake secularism and fake democracy in Jammu province and snub those in Jammu who criticize the state government's negative attitude towards it. So much so, they term the votaries of Jammu's empowerment and national integration as communal, reactionary and anti-Kashmir. The Jammu leadership needs to act and act fast. The people of Jammu want it to act and fight for their cause as well as for the national cause. They are there to extend full support to their leadership and defeat those exploiting and harming Jammu and the nation. They want their leadership to lead them. Will it? |
