SCPC meet discusses wide ranging consumer issues | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, DECEMBER 11- Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) and Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon today stressed on launching mass awareness campaign to educate people about their consumer rights, saying that knowledge of rights guarantees their protection. Mr Akhoon said this while chairing a high level meeting of State Consumer Protection Council (SCPC) and senior officers of CA&PD department, convened to discuss various issues related to the consumer affairs. The Minister said Enforcement Squads have already been constituted to monitor the distribution of food grains and other essential commodities, which he said have ensured sale of items of daily use on approved rates. He said the department has also launched the websitewww.dircapdjmu.nic.in and toll free helpline 2502609 at the Directorate of CA&PD Jammu for the convenience of the consumers of Jammu where they can register their grievances for timely redress. These measures, he said are aimed at bringing transparency in the working of the department and safeguard of consumer rights. The President, Chamber of Industries and Commerce, Jammu Y V Sharma sought formulation of Transport Policy and re-planning of traffic movement including those of VIPs in both the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar. He said without transport policy, the traffic scenario is unlikely to improve. Threadbare discussion was held on wide ranging issues including introduction of Metro Rail in twin capital cities, creation of own parking slots by the shopping mall owners, streamlining fee structure by private schools, setting up Kissan mandies at prime locations, streamlining the ration distribution system and supply of LPG and K. Oil. The meeting was informed that the Enforcement Wing of the CA&PD Department is keeping close vigil on markets. It has booked 626 Rehriwallas for violating norms compounding fine worth Rs 5 lakhs during its 2107 inspections in Jammu city. It was also given out in the meeting that one new LPG station for Auto Rikshaws is ready for commissioning at Nagrota, while as 3 LPG stations one at Bijbehara and 2 stations in Srinagar city are being completed soon where the LPG will be exclusively available for Autos. This will ease rush on petrol pumps also. Legal Metrology Department, Jammu, has booked 140 Auto Rikshaws imposing a fine of Rs 54,000 for violating the rules and regulations while as Rs 2.50 lakh including a fine of Rs 65000 have been collected as calibration charges from 2876 Auto Rikshaws in Kashmir Valley. The Council members unanimously hailed the decision of the government for implementation of Public Services Guarantee Act (PSG) in the State which, they said will go a long way in safeguarding the consumer rights. Director Muhammad Hanief Malik, State Level Coordinator, Oil Industry of India R.K.Shahaf President Chamber of Industries and Commerce, Jammu Y.V.Sharma President AWSC Vikram Gour, President Consumer Protection Council D. R. Danish, Secretary General ACTF Neeraj Anand senior officers of Legal Metrology Department and members of various organization attended the meeting.
