Patient-doctor ratio to be reduced in health institutions in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 11:The state Government has decided to upgrade fire fighting programme in all the 22 district hospitals besides the two medical colleges and Sher-e- Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences at Soura in Srinagar. According the Minister for Medical Education, R S Chib, besides providing better machinery and equipment for diagnostics and surgery in the 22 district hospitals, medical colleges and 3400 health institutions a comprehensive plan was being formulated to improve the fire fighting mechanism after the recent fire incident in Kolkatta where 89 people were killed in the blaze in a hospital. Government functionaries said that two issues were being given top priority. First was to reduce the doctor-patient ratio by appointing more qualified doctors. Under the plan the number of paramedics in the hospitals and primary health centre too was being increased. They said that at present there were 5800 doctors who were to look after patients lying on 11840 beds. Secondly, medicare facilities besides the fire fighting equipments were being upgraded in all health institutions including 238 dispensaries and 2293 sub-centres. Under the plan more dispensaries and primary health centres were being added to the existing over 361 such institutions. The plan envisages restructuring of the entire medicare system so that patients were not forced to visit Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh for treatment and surgeries. Under the plan rules were being simplified so as to make it easy for the owners and managers of super specialty hospitals and nursing homes to set up their units in Jammu and Kashmir. Experts said that there was need for setting up super specialty hospitals under public-private partnership so that the usual practice of these private hospitals to fleece the patients was discouraged.
