12/12/2011 10:32:29 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 12 : Following an terror attack on the Law Minister, Ali Mohd.Sagar, in interior of Srinagar on Sunday, in which one PSO was killed and three others were injured the National Conference leadership has decided to go slow with its demand for revocation of the AFSPA from some areas in the state.
High placed sources in administration said that no date has been fixed for the withdrawal of the AFSPA from subareas of the state. The sources said that Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah who had continually pleaded to the centre for the green signal for lifting the AFSPA from some areas in the state may slower the pace.
However, latest intelligence inputs have revealed that besides plans for increasing the level of ingress of militants from across the LOC efforts were being made by militants to carry out reorganization so that the level of armed attacks on the security forces and on political leaders was hiked. It is in the context of these reports that the state Government has preferred caution to any hast y decision on the revocation of the AFSPA.
Sources said that had the union Home Minister, P Chidambaram's, recommendations been accepted by the Defence Ministry and the top functionaries of the Army the AFSPA would have been withdrawn by the end of last month. But the Defence
Minister, A K Antony has opposed revocation of AFSPA even from some areas in view of the tough opposition from the Army Chief Gen V K Singh and the corps commanders posted in Jammu and Kashmir.
Latest reports indicated that Omar Abdullah may take up withdrawal of AFSPA from the districts of Srinagar, Budgam, Jammu and Kathua with the central Government and the Defence Minister after watching the developments on the border and within the state for another three months.
If the situation remained peaceful as it had been during the last eight months the Defence Ministry can have no objection to Omar's demand for revocation of AFSPA from subareas in the state.
It is to mention that
