Without election it is pre-poll scene in J&K ? | | | Next Assembly election is due in 2014,in case no unexpected political and constitutional development took place warrantig early poll. But during the last one year the political scene in the state resembles pre-poll activities. Thanks to the role being played by the main opposition PDP.The party led by Mehbooba Mufti has kept the National Conference led Government on the tenterhooks. A stage has reached where the Chief Minister and the NC leadership have been left with no other alternative but to attempt at hijacking the PDP's political agenda. If one may not commit any blasphemy one is tempted to say that Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, started imitating Mufti Mohd.Sayeed's repeated demand for the withdrawal of the AFSPA and troops from within the civilian areas after he (Omar) found that the Mufti's slogan has been receiving widespread support from people in the Kashmir valley.Omar has been seen parroting the Mufti's demand for the resumption of India-Pakistan dialogue process for resolving all bilateral problems. Those who have been watching the ups and downs in the political panorama in Jammu and Kashmir say that Omar had remained silent on this issue but during the last one year resuming Indo-Pak dialogue process has been his one of the main demands. Omar took over as Chief Minister in early 2008 but till the beginning of 2010 he was silent on the revocation of AFSPA, withdrawal of troops and about the need for the resumption of India-Pakistan dialogue process. He raked up these issues only after he received reports indicating that the PDP patron Mufti Mohd.Sayeed had been making inroads in the NC areas of influence.Had it not been the case why did Omar remain silent on the need for the resumption of centre-separatists dialogue till the middle of 2010 and raked up the same issue with full vigour only after his going became difficult with the rise of the civilian strife that rocked the Kashmir valley last summer.Finding that critics have been accusing them of hijacking PDP's political agenda Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Farooq have started blaming the the Muftis for double speak. It was a revelation when Farooq Abdullah accused the PDP leadership of saying one thing in Kashmir, other thing in Jammu and yet another thing in New Delhi. Those who have knowledge of the political history of the state vis-a-vis the rule and the role of the National Conference are aware of the dual policies the NC leadership adopted since 1948.Even the common and illiterate people in the state are aware of the changing political strategy NC leaders, right from Sheikh Abdullah down to Omar Abdullah, have adopted. There are series of instances which confirm fluctuating attitude of the NC leaders. For over 20 years Sheikh Abdullah had questioned the state's accession with India and when he regained power he was heard telling people that he never questioned the accession but the quantum of accession. Farooq Abdullah joined hands with Molvi Faooq to defeat the Congress and the same Farooq hammered out an accord with Rajiv Gandhi. For Gul Shah it was 100-year love story with the Congress but when he lost power he saw India being ruled by Brahmin imperialism. And the political atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir is hot with PDP and the NC trying to measure muscles in the way one does it during the election period. Both the parties are trying to inflate their vote bank on the wreckage of the state unit of the Congress and the BJP.Both BJP and the Congress have been plagued by factionalism and groupism motivating the rival camps to indulge in mudslinging publicly. And for the NC leadership it's trump card is to berate the PDP and for the PDP poor performance of the Government is NC's Achille's heel. |
