But where are the halls to house silver screen? | Of Farooq's cinema talk | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 12: Former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah last week talked about opening cinema halls to `attract tourists'. He evoked severe criticism from the separatists and the clergy. An angry Farooq responded by saying that Jammu Kashmir was a secular state. However, amid this high drama, the commoner raised the most important question. Where are the cinema halls? The cinema halls were closed down in 1990 when insurgency gained momentum. In 1996 the Farooq led NC regime tried its best to open the cinema halls. A few were opened. However, the halls had to be closed down for want of business and security. The posh Broadway had to wind up as no viewers were available. Regal in the heart of Residency Road was also opened but had to be closed on the day it opened. A grenade was hurled on the viewers when they came out of the hall after enjoying Sunny Doel's `Pyaar Koi khel Nahi'. Neelam defied all threats and continued its `operations'. But could not resist last year's agitation. It was also closed down. The Palladium cinema in the heart of historic Lal Chowk has been reduced to rubble. According to reports, the authorities are considering construction of a shopping complex at the place. Regal has been purchased by the CIE (Cottage Industries Exposition) group. The erstwhile cinema hall now houses CIE's office. The question of using it as a cinema hall, therefore, does not arise. Similarly the Khayaam has been bought by Khyber Group of Industries. The business house now runs a hospital in there. Naaz cinema has been turned into commercial complex and Shah Cinema continues to remain in occupation of the armed forces. The Central reserve Force (CRPF) personnel recently vacated the Firdous. The hall is located in an area where the authorities or the owners cannot afford any misadventure. |
